QUOTE(dcheek @ Mar 10 2017, 03:42 PM)
Got a call from the mechanic today. Great news, carbs were cleaned, linkages lubed, installed a new set of points and it started right up. Of course this was with an external gasoline source, as the tank is coated with rust. Tomorrow we are trailering it back to the owner's garage to pull the tank and work on the brakes and other items to get it back on the road.
The mechanic was impressed with the build and way it ran. He said that there was really nothing to worry about other than sorting out the gas tank issue and, of course, the brakes, fluids and tires.
I will post more pictures as work progresses. At least mechanically the motor is sound, so on with the show!

Love hearing this. Hopefully I will get to hear her sing soon.

Pulled the gas tank and taking it to a specialist to boil out and coat the inside and paint the outside. No rust underneath tank.
Then it's on the changing all the fluids and get it on the road.

This is what happens when you have and make a ton of money, but don't have time to enjoy it. The PO probably paid a lot of money for this car, and rightfully so, and had no time to use or take care of it. Couple that with the fact it was the only one of his car collection that he had to leave outside for lack of space. I don't want to tell you what he had garaged - it would make you sick! At least we got to this one soon enough that, with a little TLC, will once again be worthy of the Porsche 914 heritage.

New tires purchased this week.
In need of the following items to proceed with resurrection for a 1974 914:
-Complete stock black interior including door panels.
-Windshield
-Rear Spoiler - The short one that bolts to the lid
-Stock seat belts with retractors.
Let me know what you got and how much. Maybe we can do the deal(s) at Hershey coming up on April 22nd.

That one was made by one of the 914world members. he is in the vendors section if he still makes them. They are designed specifically for flared cars.

Car is going to Hershey on April 22nd, weather permitting. It will probably be trailered since there are many more mechanical items to be sorted out in time. Besides we are looking for many items at the swap to proceed with the resurrection and need the tow vehicle pickup to carry everything back.
So Jon, if you plan on going to Hershey, chances are your car will be there. We will be taking pictures of the event and posting.

Good thing because it would probably be your new bedroom decor when the wife kicked you out of the house for buying another Porsche.

I seriously hope that, if this 914 is to be sold, Jon would be given first right to buy the car back at fair market value. Sure, it may not be the new owner's responsibility to do so, but it sure seems like the right thing to do among car enthusiasts...

The car is NOT for sale. The car was NOT purchase to flip. If is ever was put on the block Jon would have the first right of refusal. This has all been explained earlier and is not going to change.
It was my suggestion to have "Popeye" my friend bring the car to Hershey to see if what he purchased parts wise would fit his needs and the car. Trailering assured that it would make it, as there are still some issues that need to be addressed before taking a 2 hour drive. Of course the weather did not cooperate. Anyway, Popeye bought about $600 worth of parts including a rear valance which he intends to modify to fit around the custom exhaust.
Other items on the list to address are new tires, repack all the wheel bearings and some wiring issues. Once these are done then some serious road testing will determine if more mechanical issues need to be addressed.
I have a video of the car on the road for the first time in God knows how long. I could not upload the file. I've done tons of pictures on World but, it wouldn't take the video file. Any suggestions on how to post?

Hooray, he's back!
We heard going to Hershey and thought the worst..since most of us buy parts and bring them back...only to learn they don't work/fit
Never thought about trailering to check at the actual parts event.
Good work, and good luck on finishing it up!

We are trying to come up with a value for an agreed value insurance policy. I'm pretty good with values for stock 914's but not versed in modified cars. Any thoughts on what we should insure it for? I was guessing $20-$25 K ????

Its been a long time since I posted an update.
There has been a minor setback. Something got sucked into cylinder #5, causing the plug electrode to bend, Also the rings and piston and valves were damaged causing zero compression. The engine has been removed and semi dismantled to assess the damage. New parts have been ordered and are on the way. While it's being repaired the engine tin and fan shroud will be repainted.
I will post pictures soon.
