This one is the more expensive jacket.

FYI Aaron - Some clarification if I may.
Their jacket isn't $168 dollars, it's 169 Euro. 169Euro = $217.38 USD Or 169Euro less 20% = 139.20 Euro = $173.91 USD. Shipping at 10-15 Euro = $12.86 - $19.29 USD
It is this one (gif from the American vendor's site):

Thier cheaper jacket is 129 Euro = 103.2Euro = $132.75 + Shipping at 10-15 Euro = $12.86 - $19.29 USD
This is the less expensive model (again, gif from the U.S. vendor's site):

You should probably also double check that shipping. Their web site indicates 35Euro so 10-15 Euro seems too cheap.

i'm in for a size large.
regarding shipping:
i think the vendor would take our order, with individual addresses, then distribute the jackets at the shipping price.
you'd think they would bulk ship those that are going to the same address, or if there's a group, say in l.a. that meet regularly... i don't think it would be good to ship twice, that sounds like a waste to me.
i'd really prefer the lemans jacket though.

and 40-eleven individual customs declarations?
international shipping is a PITA !
i think they'd be MUCH more willing to put everything in one big box and fill out ONE customs declaration for the lot - might even be worth a bit of a discount...
(but there is the issue of paying duty on one $3000 box rather than many $150 ones, that might sneak through u7nnoticed...)
i only see the export side where i work - anybody here know how it works for imports ?

Imports work this way:
Country of origin (countrys currency) Times the rate of exchange on the date on the invoice they are shipped Times the rate of duty from the country of origin plus the freight.
Also US Customs seems to want you to use a broker if a shipment is valued over $200 US (add another 10% or more for the brokers services)

i looked at the pictures; they weren't much help. there are hints to the effect that the one pictured isn't what we're getting. i didn't see any actual pictures nor descriptions of what we actually WERE supposed to be getting.
and there were many responses that didn't quote what they were responding to, so the whole thing has been very confusing. especially since the thread is still called "Le Mans jacket group buy thread,,,"
so - tell ya what - when we can get an actual official thread with pictures, descriptions, and delivered pricing of what we're ACTUALLY going to get for our money, i'll be able to commit.
i don't think i'm being unreasonable wanting to know exactly what is being offered, and at what price...

here is the link to the site of which we are buying the jackets
www.grandprix-jackets.com/english/index.htm
point 1 THERE ARE DIFFERENT STYLES OF JACKETS THAT YOU CAN CHOOSE FROM
there are a few different types of jackets, and i will list them all here
ORIGINAL GRAND PRIX - 129 euro 166.874 USD
this is the one i thought we would mainly order, because its the same style as the le mans jacket, only it lacks the le mans lettering on the back, along with the american flag patch. it is made out of cotton
GP 24 HEURS - 169 euro 218.618 USD
this is the original one that was ordered by the PP board, it has the 24 heurs le mans lettering on the back and has an american flag patch on the shoulder. this is the more expensive version, and if you want to order this one, please verify that
LADIES GRAND PRIX - 129 euro 166.874 USD
this is just the womens version of the grand prix jacket, same style, but with a womens fit
GP RACING LEATHER - 298 euro 385.493 USD
the same style as the Grand Prix jacket, but with a cowskin leather outside
note: all these prices are before the 20 percent discount that we will recieve for the group buy
shipping on this is still needs to be figured out, i will email the vendor and ask whether he prefers to ship them individually or all in one package
so i will get back to you all with that issue shortly

Come on Rich... You have a guy here (Aaron [i love porsche]) that volunteered to put together a group buy. He's never done it before. Go do you homework. Below my post with the pictures is a post with links to the American Vendor's site and the European vendor's site. Have a look at one or both of them and you'll know as much as anyone else does. All of this information was in the original thread. I'm going to edit Aaron's original post here and update it with these details if that will be helpful.

here's my guess:
a group buy gets you distributor pricing, for which you get to be treated like a distributor: you get all your stuff in one box which they will ship to one address and prepare one customs declaration, and you will get to arrange individual delivery. a distributor does that from his 20 per cent discount, and gets to keep anything left over. so please check into that very carefully.
thanks for posting the product details!
the USD took another hit against the Euro yesterday; it's just a shade under $1.30... and the transport companies are still imposing fuel surcharges on top of their published rates; read all the fine print to avoid unpleasant surprises...
until we know the delivered price, we still don't know what we're being asked to pay.
if i do the math right, the "GP 24 Heures" is Eu169 * 1.2978 * .8 ~= 175.
the "Original GP" is Eu129 * 1.2978 * .8 ~= 135.
if you can confirm those numbers, i WILL COMMIT to one or the other, so if you're counting heads to get up to 20, i'm in.
when you know what shipping will cost, delivered to my door, i'll be able to tell you which i can afford.

May 7 2005, 09:30 AM
well.the us buyers prices are alot higher, and we get the same 20 % discount...the price still ended up being high so lots of people dropped out, which would lower the discount and up the price again..prettymuch ruining the point of a group buy, and the european seller was a decent considerable amount less so we are going to go with them
ok, the seller gave me an estimate for two boxes of jackets to come here for around 160, when you divide that by 20, you get 8 dollars a person.
this is just for shipping, customs and stuff will be a bit more, so im not sure how much that will cost, does anyone have an idea?
after the boxes are here, (im assuming they will be sent to my house) i will distribute them from there. i know that all this shipping is quite a hit on you all, so if by the time it arrived here, you needed an extra week or two to get some more paychecks in, that would be no problem at all.
if you want to calculate shipping for yourself, it would be from the 07110 zip code
hope this information helps =]

Rates of duty varry depending on where, how and what something is made of. There is also quota placed on clothing. Each country is given a quota of garments (read $ value) and a permit is required from the government to import under that permit. The permit tracks the amount of goods imported from that country. For example if the goods are made in Canada, USA or Mexico they are imported under the Free Trade accord, but a permit is still required. They can be assembled in another country but made of material made in one of the free trade countrys and be imported duy free (permit still required).
Also each garment if for resale can be required to be labeled properly. This not only includes material contents, care and sizing, but also they can be required to have a manufactures number on the label. This is found by looking for the RN# (USA) or the CA# (Canada) that should be found on the tags on the garment.
There are 95 pages in the Harmonized Tariff Schedule dealing with clothing and another 56 pages that deal with cotton. The general rules are another 424 pages. Think your tax forms are complicated? Try importing something. Just looking for the right classifcation will give you a headache.
You really need to ask the manufacture for the tariff code treatment to determine what the duty rate into the USA will be. As they have exported to the USA before they should know. Rates can vary from 8.5% to 58.5% (from what I can tell) I wasn't able to find the country classifcation but Germany should be general (8.5% duty)
Customs can ask where the cotton was made (yes, the raw material). It surprizes me that they don't want to know where the bees/bugs come from that polinate the plants.
If you add 10% for the dutys and another 10% for the brokerage you should be safe.
You don't pay dutys on the shipping.
Clear as mud yet?

organising the group buy is easy.
getting a better delivered price than the established distributor that does this for a living every day - that's hard. these are people who already have their contracts with the shippers, know how to handle the customs brokers, and buy in large quantities that net them even better price points.
i have to give you full marks for effort - an international deal right out of the blocks was something that most of us (well, for sure i) would not even have attempted.
it's VERY hard to pull off a group buy without SOMEONE getting really pissed off, or losing a bunch of money - or both.
there was one famous group-buy attempt here in recent history that ended fairly badly, so you're well ahead of the game to have avoided that.
