Full Version: oil pump R &R info/torque

I have apparently loaned out my tom Wilson book and can not find/remember where it could be.

I need to pull and re-seal my oil pump due to a persistent small leak

Its a melling oil pump with a type1 cover plate
the leak is small, but drips or seeps enough to run back onto the motor at highway speeds and a couple of drops on the ground overnight after a good drive

I suspect the steel pump/aluminum case, expansion rate differences are part of the cause.

but I'd like to re- seal it, and I'm positive I've done this job before with the engine in the car. I believe the separate cover plate makes it easier without pulling the fan housing. (may have to pull a couple of studs)

What I'd love is any advice, tips, products, and torque values that might increase my chances of success.

planned on using an anaerobic sealant on the cover plate like the Loctite one I have on hand, but open to any better recommendations that might be more successful.

thanks in advance.

My advice is to get rid of that POS pump. biggrin.gif

It works fine with my front cooler though
It's an old one when they were better made/tolerances

Still junk, want a couple more? smile.gif

30mm schadek would be my choice for a front cooler, 26mm without.

sounds like more money
where do you prefer to get them from?

Since that pump is a different material than the engine case they have different rates of expansion, those pumps need a groove machined into the body and an o-ring installed. If not they will suck air in at high rpms, not good.
The o-ringed pump needs to be installed when putting the case half together.
Gene Berg sells a pump already o-ringed.
I remember having to install longer studs in order to fit the pump and cover, motor mount and fan shroud are in the way.
I thought replacing the oil cooler was tedious.

Torque is the same as the engine nuts 2.0 mkg or 14.5 ftlbs.
Good luck
Mike
