PS - I Added Info for Woody's Customs Adapters for OE Radios at Post #4

As an FYI for those of you out there not concerned about keeping a period radio in your 914s, & if you can't use paper maps or your smartphone's often wrong mapping - then Porsche is selling their Radio/Nav unit for the classic Porsches like our 914s, but it is pricey, but it's a Porsche part - waddaya expect! huh.gif

Now that everyone has a smartphone (it seems), does anyone really need a small video display on an expensive radio to provide directions? A Bluetooth equipped radio (with or without CD capability) should suffice for most folks. I just wish that more modern radios had a nice vintage look to them.

I ended up just going with a bluetooth hands free adapter kit (link below). Works great, actually sounds better playing music through the phone than the actual radio

If you want to run your BT/Aux 3.5mm/USB/Apple through your old school Porsche/dealer supplied radio - & actually have it sound good - then you want to go to Woody's Customs & look at their adapters, radios, etc.

http://woodyscustomshop.com/online-store/

They've supplied the SoCal classic Porsche/BMW/MBZ/etc. crowd for decades, & are usually at the big SoCal Porsche Swap & Lit Shows every March.

They also have Hirschmann/etc. antennas, hidden antennas 4x6 speakers which fit our 914 housings, & a neat flat square pair of speakers which will fit under or behind your seats for 4-channel sound - without holing your door panels!

.

For George - they also make vintage look modern radios + hidden ones! biggrin.gif

I tried one of those wireless adapters in my 88 Westy, but the sound sucked & was a waste of money IMHO.

That's why I qualified it George with those who can't use paper maps or their phones.

I'll be keeping my original dealer supplied Motorola made AM/FM/8-Track & adding the Aux/USB/BT Adapter at the Woody's Customs link I added at post #4 above.

They also have hidden stealth & retro-look modern radios for you! piratenanner.gif

Woody's don't look bad, but check out the VDO Continental line carried by eGuages.com. Very nice looking and reasonably priced, though I understand they don't have preamp outputs I've been told. I'm thinking of getting one for my 911 Targa to replace the funky Pioneer unit that was installed by the PO.

I've got an oil pressure gauge where my radio used to be... couldn't really hear it anyway with the top off!

Saves weight too... wink.gif

I considered the Porsche retro Navi but instead went with the Navi unit from a boxster which does not look too blingy, works well and reasonably priced. I also did pick up the VDO Continental unit which definitely has a clean look to it that fits well with character of the 914.

I called the folks at eGuages today and it seems they've stopped selling the Continental radios. They are still available on eBay from Germany, but I've been unable to locate another U.S. based source for them.

I don't know if they are availeable in the US, but in Europe you can get pretty cheap Becker looking radios from a brand called Caliber. They are available in black or chrome finish

Caliber RMD120BT/B Compact, Bluetooth, no CD, Input Aux (3.5mm) SD, USB ...
