Ok,
First off fix the valves.
Stop looking at TDC and JUST look at the rockers on both sides with the valve covers off. Rotate the engine with one wheel on the ground , engine in 5th gear. Rotate rear wheel in reverse until both valves you are looking at are closed and both rockers are loose.
OR, rotate the engine until the valve it open all the way, then go to the same valve on the other side of the motor, it will be closed, adjust it. The second method is even more precise.

You adjusted the valves wrong....
Use this method above or go read Capn Crustys valve adjustment article in the frequent tech articles forum here, same deal but he may have explained it better than me.

A) capn is dead
B) if you take a look at a camshaft for the motors you will see it has a fairly large area where you can adjust the valves.

So, don't be stubborn, stop looking at the distributor, rotor, notch in the flywheel and focus on the valves and adjust them again. Read capns article (he was a very mechanic for over 40 years and reminded us daily)

RIP capn
