Full Version: What do you think a tricked out 914 built to these specs would be worth?

I have built and sold other 914's with LS power and G50-52. Now I am out on a new adventure and want to keep the German theme and starting to wonder how up side down I will be. Face it, we just don't get our money back do we?
What is your guess on value if done well.

Good clean tub with no rust
All the body stiffening and Chromoly cage
2.7 Bi turbo Audi V6 450hp
Cayman 6 speed trans with Wavetrac LSD
Porsche 996 suspension and Brakes
Steel GT fenders
Cable operated head lights
996 turbo wheels
fixed in place metal roof
sparse interior like a Singer 911, a true drivers car
With everything in working order and well sorted.

I think it would be a keeper for me but I always say that.

What do you think for a value?

Mikey914
About 80% of what you have into it.
Mikey914
If you want to do it for you by all means do it. But as an investment probably not the best return on it.
Larmo63
Do it, and document it.

Keep us entertained here.

Agree with the above and it depends on the execution as well as the demand for that type of custom. From what I have seen over the years, high dollar conversion cars sit for sale a long time.

If you do it all yourself you'll be very upside down and few prospects to sell
If you pay to have it done you'll be extremely upside down when 50% done and no prospects to sell. But you'll have all the parts.
There is a thread here with very similar specs.

If you use a non Porsche engine, 50% of what you put into it - max.

Not saying it to be flippant, it's just the reality.
What you're proposing is a poopload of work and reality is the only way to recoup the cost is a decade of grins on your own face.

The only way to make money would be to buy someone's 90% done unfinished project for .20-.30 cents on the dollar, finish then flip. But even then it would have to be a nice /4, /6 or a well sorted /6 conversion.
Any custom and/or non-Porsche conversion, even a well sorted V8 would be difficult to sell for it's true value.

Just a point to ponder, almost no shop will service the car you just spec, so your only potential buyer would likely be an enthusiast.
A fellow enthusiast won't pay top dollar, he'll just build his own.

You will get 40 percent of what you put in unless you find the perfect buyer who wanted to build it exactly the way you built it. Ususally its you lol

Depends on the final product.

A high end shop build maybe 40k. Home build maybe 30k.

The market is not easy to predict on these kind of cars.

I think of the green STI motor car that was bought down south for about 30k, it was a shop build and was about as nice as they come.

Looks like you all feel about the same as me. I've never made money on a conversion 914 but I have always got my money back from the parts. My labor is free because I love to build. The most I have got out of a V8 conversion is $24K. I really do always say this is the last one and when its complete I just need something to build. I took a break from 914's and the last build was a 1 ton jeep/Crawler and now that its done I all ready have all of the above mentioned parts for the 914. Building is a sickness for me.

I have always had alternative power - with the exception of one six - the lowest performer of the bunch (resale wise)...well "performance" wise too. poke.gif

(And) I have always sold my cars for more than my hard costs but with my labor-for-free. My current car's selling price would make most (members here) puke...I am just saying there can be exceptions, that's all.

PS: Mark...hope you are well...are you attending O.F. later this year? beerchug.gif

Your car is a proven track performer that has been documented, I think for your case that greatly increases the value since whomever was to buy it would more than likely track the car as well.

larryM
go for it if it makes you happy while the project lasts

at the end - it is worth the ebay value of the expensive collected parts & body shell sold separately

it's a hobby.. your labor is free -just a charitable donation

personal value is that of an e-ticket ride at Disneyland
