What years used what gages. Specifically, what years used the Silver Dot series? TIA, Kent

I believe the switchover from silver dot to black happened at some point in the 1974 MY.

1973 and older, and some of the early 74 cars had silver button gauges.

My 1974 2.0 has the silver dot gauges. It's an August '73 build, VIN 4742900048.

Well so far above - there are either some typos, or misunderstanding of the time for silver dots!

Usually it's 70-73 MY with silver dot, & 74-76 with black dot, but some early MY 74's still got silver if that's what Heine grabbed from the bin.

There's som ereally great reference info on 914 gauges etc. at p914.com (.net & .org), just go to the gauges section, & it shows both silver vs. black dot & OT red zone change, etc.

Wow - very early 73 build! Did yours have the black vinyl on the windshield frame/A-pillar?

Mine is ....1954 & it has remnants of the front frame vinyl under the rubber, even after my 2 repaints & the PO-OO's/dealer's 2 repaints from L80E.

Yes, very early '74. Build date is 8/13/1973 per chassis number. The center console also has a Kienzle clock and the temp gauge has the larger red area like the '73. I agree that Hans was probably grabbing old stuff off the shelf at this point
Can't see any vinyl on the windshield frame but I'm also not sure what I'm looking for. The a-pillar is vinyl covered for sure though.

I never post anything about it anymore but I also have a very original 75-76 Porsche (semantics ) that has Silver Dot gages. Those ain't OEM! Ed (of Tangerine Racing fame) rode shotgun with me about 5-6 years ago and pointed that out to me. Now I understand my flasher confusion. Time to post a WTT: in the classifieds.

I wouldn't worry about them Kent, cuz #1 the silver dots look better IMHO, & #2 the earlier silver dot gauges actually have 2 flashers -

That's ONE for L & ONE for R turns for the Porsche & VW Engineers!

I was not impressed when I test drove new 75 & 76 2.0's back in 75 when I was deciding what to get, before I got my 73 2L - with that cheapo trick & the other things they did to cut cost from late 73 on.

I also thought is was cheap & poor engineering when we bought our 88 Westy new, that they had only one flasher on that then $28,000+/- sticker priced car!
