New to this any help I can get. So any idea what engine this is? Click to view attachment

EC is a '74 1.8 engine code, but it's in the wrong place for a 914 so I'm going to say it's out of a VW 412.

Where's the dipstick located?

Well a picture worth a thousand words.

I decreased the engine and that was the only number I could find other than the ones on the transmission.

It's not a 2.0 (at least if stock).

I should have said the car it's self is a 1972 but that's not to say this engine is...it was kinda a barn find hasn't been on the road since or tags since 1996.

As near as I can tell, it's a 74 or 75 low compression, CA only 1.8 with F/I but I'm not sure they had four bolt intakes. That's got me thinking.

The EC engines were 1.8 used in the 914 and 411/412.
The engine number location would seem to indicate this engine is from a 411/412.
Also the dipstick tube looks to be covered with a hose? Possible spme me fabed a rubber dipstick tube to relocate it for use in the 914. 411/412 dipsticks were similar to buses and go down low by the front engine mount.

All stock 1.7 & 1.8 engines used 4 bolt intakes as so did the 2.0 bus engines.
914/912E 2.0 were the only engines to use 3 bolt intakes.

Like I said 1974 412, they didn't make a 411 in 1974.
Why I also asked about the dipstick.
I've seen the web site that says EC is a California only code, but it's wrong, my Canadian sold 1974 914 had an EC code engine with no smog pump.

Look at the front of the engine case, right side bottom you will see a cover plate, big hole two bolts, likely homemade.

So it ran when I got it home ( smoked and had a miss) should rebuild or replace? Also I forgot to say it had dual carburetors that I had to take off to get the engine tins off. All I'm looking for is a good weekend driver.... still working on the body and most things 914 seem to have go wrong with them.

Thanks again for all the help from everyone.
