FS: 1971 914 Spec Race Car

$19,000. I will start with this price, but the market will bear what the market bears, I suppose. There is at least $35,000 in this build and subsequent upgrades. This 914 is a fully caged spec race car that campaigns in a local series we have here in San Marcos, Texas, south of Austin. Our little sprint series features only about 40 cars, 914s and Miatas, and this car has run in 4 of the 6 seasons.

The car was built as a racecar about 6 years ago by Bob Jones Autowerkes in San Antonio. I believe it is a 1.8L with a hotter-than-stock cam, but I don't know the specs on the cam. It might have side reinforcement--but I don't know 914s well enough to know for sure, and I can't take a pic right now, the car lives at Harris Hill Raceway. It has dual weber IDF 40s with 115 main jets and 55 idle jets. The carbs were recently fully broken down and fully cleaned. They were completely messed when I got them but I spent about 10 hours, including an Ultrasonic cleaning and now they are perfect.

The Bad:

It spits oil at full throttle--this happened the last time I tracked it and I pulled over immediately and was only down a quart. Also, one of the two throttle linkage screws is completely frozen, and I cracked apart the aluminum coupler trying to get it out, but I have the forward shift rod and a new coupler and screws on the way. Currently it doesn't have the covers and boots on the shift linkage, but I have those parts too.

What It's Got:

Fully caged
It was a fully repaired tub, very clean with hell hole repaired.
Lexan Windscreen
$1500 Braille Micro-Lite MC20 battery
Very fresh paint, the pictures speak for themselves with just a mark here and there
Electrical safety cutoffs on outside and inside of car
Wired and plumbed for Coolshirt
Fuel cutoff switch on dash
Pushbutton start
Terminal block for power in front trunk
Fresh front air dam from AutoAtlanta
Fresh side rocker panel covers.
Rennsport shifter--a bit older but works fine
Cold start circuit in carbs was blocked shut using the tap with set screw method
Fresh K&N filters, CB Performance 7x4x3.5 filter housings
Driver's seat: Kirky aluminum with 5-point harness
Passenger seat: Kirky aluminum with 5-point harness
Tangerine Racing cable linkage system
Tangerine oil catch can
Tangerine clutch pulley adapter
Tangerine Full exhaust
Autometer shift light with tach--this reads a little "jumpy"
AEM AF gauge mounted under dash
Front dashboard vent to front trunk are all blocked except one for coolshirt plumbing and electrical
AN plumbed external oil cooler behind rear tire
Bilstein coilovers
Brand new carter 3.5psi fuel pump
Mr. Gasket fuel regulator, Inline
Inline Fuel gauge, reads 3.25 with fuel regulator
Wilwood brake bias adjuster in cabin
Removeable side windows
Small triangle side windows are lexan with pop vents
Rennline pedal board
New Momo Suede steering wheel
Probably some other stuff I am forgetting

The pictures show progress as I have worked on the car. Basically, it's a great build by a respected guy, with a lot of great enhancements. I will add more pictures once I get back to the car.

Here's the car as it looks today:

A note about the oil leak, which someone asked me about--I just had the valves adjusted and the valve cover gaskets replaced with silicone gaskets. I haven't even lifted the car yet but it's highly likely, since the leak happened within 10 miles of this change, that the gaskets failed. I will update the listing when I get someone to look at the car.

These freshly powdercoated Fuchs will be going on. Don't hate on the color, I got these already media blasted...Car is still for sale.

Do you still have the car? Is it always at HHR?
I am interested.

Yes, I have it. I have another update: I have repaired the oil leak be replacing the valve cover gaskets with the german rubber-and-cork type, and car is good to go, and has been shaken down. The car lives at Harris Hill Road and I am doing two 30 minute sprint races in the car on saturday.
