Does anyone know how to test a stand-alone VDO gas gauge outside of the car and without a sender hooked up to it?

Our pal Steve gave me two of these to choose one from, and indicated that one may have issues. I clearly don't want to adapt the wrong one to my gauge cluster as it is fairly complicated putting the smaller gauge inside of one of my larger diameter VDO three gauge cluster cans. Larger gauges shown / / and smaller fuel gauges front and back

Thanks for links or experience...

Either hook it up to a spare sender (and power and ground, plus ground to the sender) and turn the sender upside down and rightside up, or hook it to power and ground and a ~100 ohm potentiometer from the sender terminal to ground. The needle should move in either case.

Thanks to all herein / just did the 9 volt battery to the G (sender) and the - (neg) and the needle jumped on one gage and not the other after repeated tests. Of course, the somewhat dingy gauge is the one that worked........ WTF.gif

Now to find my can opener for cleaning the lens........ beerchug.gif

You can put ANY 52mm METAL case 3 post gauge into the factory 60mm case. If you need to know how I can post a conversion again.

Forrest it's definetly the top one with the gas station pump on it. I found a picture of it in my blog.
