First we couldn’t get any juice out of the alternator, then we found out it needed power from the ignition to excite the field. The alternator runs fine now….but we can’t turn off the ignition, as the alternator now supplies the ignition with power.
Does anyone know how I should wire this thing???? Is there suppose to be a one-way diode or something????
BTW it's a 70-73 alternator with an outboard regulator.

Not sure about 911 alternators, but normally if you wire the alternator output directly to the battery, then it can't bypass the ignition switch and keep the engine running.

The hot wire (B+) goes to either the starter or directly to the battery. The blue (61) wire goes to a 1.2w light bulb, and the other side of the bulb comes from the key on position of the ignition switch. Shutting off the key makes the exciter voltage go away, and the alternator stops producing current. Simple. The Cap'n
