I just wanted to say hello. I'm picking up my 1st 914 I won over ebay today. 71 1.7L, a supposed 88K miles, looks to be in great shape. All she needs is a cluch from what I can tell. This will be replacing my recently departed 86 alfa spider.

Here are some pics I took sunday while looking at it. It is a respray, and I was wondering if anything can tell me if this is a factory color. It didnt seem to match any on the 914 color list

welcome. the car looks great. when you get into the clutch, do a search BEFORE you order parts. there are odd items you might relace while you are in there. you'll hear that alot.

On the inner drivers side door jam, there is a badge that says the paint code. It is opposite side of the badge that has the date on it. Prolly not the original color, as that looks like guards red, a 944 color. Mine is Guards Red also, but the original color was met. silver Nice looking car tho!

That would be cool. There is a guy on a board I run, www.vdubaddiction.com,for all you VW guys, who has a 74 I believe. Does anyone around here meet and have gtg's? I'm sure I will have some questions and would love to see others cars.

It is hard to tell from a pic, but it is probably a non-original color. There is one way to tell for sure. Inside the driver's door jamb, you will see one of these plates with the color code on it.


Write down the code and look it up on on of the color sites. If it tells you that your car is Zambezi Green, you've got a color change. If the code is for one of the reds, then the fun conversations will begin.

Yeah it was originally signal orange it looks like. the underneath was ziebarted and some spots show through. As well as under the seats. But overall it was done nicely. You can barely tell.

I don't know of any gtg's besides the generic Porsche stuff like a swap meet at Zim's. I know a few people around DFW who are social - I think we need to get out own deal going.

I have parts and knowlege if you need anything or have questions.

Also, since you know it has been reprayed you can go to a auto body paint store, and have them use the "gun" on it. It's like a big radar gun looking thing. They clean a spot and if it is not faded it will tell you exactly what you have. My old car was reprayed 85 gm flame red (corvette color) from ravenna green. Then I had them make a bottle of touch up paint, It matched perfect. Ferg

Thanks for all the tips. I was planning on getting the pelican parts clutch package and doing the rear main while i'm in there. The paint gun sounds like a great idea. I need some touch up paint for some small blemishes, but overall the paint is in great condition. I was also thinking about painting the valences. Does anyone know if that exhaust is stock or not? Also, the fuel rail is new and has a pressure gauge on it. After reading all the problems on here that can be diagnosed by fuel pressure I think this is cool, but not something I normally see.

I'll be sure to take some more pics when I get her home.

The exhaust looks like a Bursch. You are missing the rear valance, so if you want to repaint them you might want to get one so you can do it at the same time.

Nope - I did not make it. I will be there this time, though, and I hope to meet lots of people finally.

Don't paint the valences! I've seen stock valences painted black, I've seen ABS valences. And my last one even had a stainless steel valence.... they all looked fine.

But when the valence panels match the car, for some reason it doesn't look right..... Just my opinion, the car looks great the way it is.

Ordered the clutch kit through Pelican.

Also got a couple extra c/v bolts, the Bolt removal tool, the rear main seal, input shaft seal, and a nice chunk outta my wallet.

Anyone know a good machine shop around here where I can have the flywheel turned?

i'll add a couple things to your punch list.

plastic cup for the throw out arm pivot.
anal me would replace the flywheel bolts.
if you machine the flywheel, take an equal amount off the step and shim the pivot ball bolt accordingly.
new copper washers and nuts for the exhaust.
clean and inspect the throw out arm for cracks.

you could have got the CV bolts at Zim's... they have an allen head version that doesn't need the tool!

you may give them a call and ask about turning the flywheel... but I would call Wes and have him send you to a place he likes... Wes has been doing this for years!!! (not to say Zim's hasn't...) I prefer Wes b/c he understands what a budget actually is... even if some people don't have them...

Thanks for the tips. I drove her home today with the slipping clutch. That was quite a experience. Learning to drive the tail shift tranny, slipping clutch, hot day!!!. The a/c blows ice cold! Everything is as it should. Every light works, every button/knob does its function. Drives straight, handles nice (needs better tires/rims and a stiffer suspension), steeriing is a bit loose. Runs smooth, seems to have decent power though the clutch woes prevented me from getting on it. No smoke and has good drivability. Brakes are a bit stiff and might need a going over but stop evenly. Still looking for rust besides the battery tray and havent found any. The entire underneath is coated with a protective spray (a blessing and pain) The car feels solid and everything shuts with an authorative click or thud. Im stoked!!!!

I pulled the tranny out last night. No stripped bolts, nuts, skin. No rust and not too much grime to get in the way. Piece of cake. The clutch and associated parts should be here today or tommorrow.
