But it takes a ton of work to build from scratch. Maybe there's an open-source project? Time to look at this again.
Well, i already did most of the work ...
The script work or the data entry?
Are you able to export the member data to a workable spreadsheet or a live data file?
Data entry? What is this, 1988?
The script needs some updating since Google has since deprecated their old API. But i've worked with the latest API version and changing over to that isn't a big deal.
I can easily write a simple base import script that uses peoples location field and Googles reverse geo-location lookup to do a rough initial position on the map.
Members should then be able to update their pin location in their "My Controls" section if they want to.
I think City level accuracy would be more than enough, there's no reason to advertise your address to the whole world.
Also, lookup on the map would be restricted to registered members only. No bots or spiders to scrape that info.
I also wrote a icon clustering class for Google maps a few years back that would allow for a large amount of icons on the map without slowing down scrolling and zooming. I could rework that to fit.
The real problem is TIME!
- Just bought a new house that needs some work and i'll have to move in the next 2 weeks.
- Just totaled the Jetta and need to look for a new daily driver.
- Busy with work too so not a lot of time to dedicate to this.
If i could figure out how to make $150k a year off y'all i'd be able to get this done in a week or two and even throw in all the other improvements i had planned for the site ...
