This may already be in place.

I am interested in starting a nationwide list of local 914 guys and gals as to County or some other non specific scammer location iD.

The purpose would be to have a morphing list of 914 folks who moved, stayed in place, and who is considering moving to a place where support, info, resources, etc. are a "local" known thing - but not to the newly moved 914 guy or gal.

My pal Mark moved and we don't know where in Arizona he is. I drove over there and he doesnt exist. He owes me money............ poke.gif

Not really / He is a stand up guy..., ..

Anyway, wouldn't it be nice to know who is nearby for a needed piece of tin, a tool, or a bit a seasoned knowledge.\\

Maybe this exists.

Where IB?

Laguna Beach. Soon. Not is California. Two Places. Scottsdale Az and Seattle in the summer.

Where UB?

I like the regional association for Canada...is Canada biggrin.gif
Canada has a larger land mass than the US.

What would be better is BC, Ontario, Quebec, central and eastern.

Ontario likely has the most 914's, BC 2nd place, Quebec because they get pissy if they don't get their own separate designation (relax joking), central and eastern not as many 914's and just to keep it simple.

Yup. Andy built that on the Google Maps API and it was super cool.

Close, but no cigar.

We used to have a frapr interactive map that was maintained by Howard.
Access to that died with him and then frapr went out of business.

After that, i was looking into doing something similar using Google Maps and i got as far as a working prototype, but never got to finish it.

Something like what I have done for Okteenerfest might work but would require multiple editors to add so many members.

I would volunteer to help out.
Would need some way for a member to request being added.
At the very least a Zip code could be used along with member name.
The registration plugin I use for Okteenerfest would work well since the data is put into a spreadsheet. I believe the map app allows importing a CSV file.

Ah, that's right! I guess that's just was what I was hoping for. I remember discussion about it, and I do recall seeing your prototype working.

I guess that illustrates the problem of using a 3rd party site like Frappr that can fold. But it takes a ton of work to build from scratch. Maybe there's an open-source project? Time to look at this again.

This would be great for Event caravan'n.

Wasn't there a foodie app, 4square?, that allowed you to "check-in" at whatever location you were at so "friends" or stalkers could find you? Might have been a facebook thing.

The script work or the data entry?

Are you able to export the member data to a workable spreadsheet or a live data file?

The point is to be able to look at a map and see pins where members are. Handy if you need to see who is nearby if you need help or want to meet up. Looking at each member's location one at a time is impossibly tedious for that. Privacy doesn't need to be an issue - the pin should be roughly where they live, not down to an exact address. Participation would be voluntary.

I suppose it could be done way simpler. Instead of mapping, just have people who want to participate enter their screen name and zip code into a database. Then we could search by zip code and see a list of members we could PM. The map thing is just cooler and would be fun to explore.

Another cool possibility would be a mobile page where you could use your phone to "show me member names within x miles of my current location" using GPS.

Data entry? What is this, 1988?
biggrin.gif

The script needs some updating since Google has since deprecated their old API. But i've worked with the latest API version and changing over to that isn't a big deal.
I can easily write a simple base import script that uses peoples location field and Googles reverse geo-location lookup to do a rough initial position on the map.
Members should then be able to update their pin location in their "My Controls" section if they want to.

I think City level accuracy would be more than enough, there's no reason to advertise your address to the whole world.

Also, lookup on the map would be restricted to registered members only. No bots or spiders to scrape that info.
I also wrote a icon clustering class for Google maps a few years back that would allow for a large amount of icons on the map without slowing down scrolling and zooming. I could rework that to fit.

The real problem is TIME!

- Just bought a new house that needs some work and i'll have to move in the next 2 weeks.
- Just totaled the Jetta and need to look for a new daily driver.
- Busy with work too so not a lot of time to dedicate to this.

If i could figure out how to make $150k a year off y'all i'd be able to get this done in a week or two and even throw in all the other improvements i had planned for the site ...

That's sure not how I think of it. screwy.gif Funny though biggrin.gif
Sure, those apps show people nearby, but I was thinking 914world members only, and the purpose would be to find nearby members that you could come on here and PM if you are on a road trip and need help or want to grab a beer.

It's actually a cool idea especially as there are so few 914s in the U.K., was just trying to be funny - which frankly is rare for me

Oddly, it turns out around where I live there are a smattering of 914 owners, but only one who has a running car (Chris), who I managed to meet the other weekend at Hatfield Porsche to celebrate them attaining their Classic status.

Stupidly I didn't take any pictures of Chris car headbang.gif although I think Chris 914, my long hood 911, a late 80s 911 and a 356 rag top were the only air cooled stuff that pitched up

I have been a member of this forum and the previous forum since 2004 and it has never been required to know where ANYONE lives or what their address is to find out information about who might have a piece of tin, a tool or a bit of seasoned knowledge. In fact that is the main advantage of this forum that the knowledge of these cars is spread all over the world and is readily available with a few key strokes of your computer.

You might have a year or two on me regarding membership date, but that's irrelevant and you are still missing the point. You haven't been paying attention. smoke.gif It's not about knowledge or parts! headbang.gif
I don't give a rip about your address. But repeating the examples, it would be cool to be on a road trip and stopover somewhere, and have an easy way to see who might be in the area. Or again, if you need urgent/roadside help in the area. Or simply enjoy seeing how our membership is spread out across the globe visually.

Maybe instead of accusing me of missing the point and not paying attention you should read the first post again. Something about parts, knowledge, tools, etc.
