Hi People
I am looking for a type of laptop that has no lid... ohmy.gif
I spotted it in an Ins Adjusters car, I'll describe :
Same size as a laptop but the touch screen is in the main encloser, making it thicker then normal. It had 2 rubber handles on the sides, CD, 3.5, USB...full load. Basically it looks like a Diagnostic tool, which is what I want it for. PC that runs on Windows.
Take 2 Snapon Scanners and stack one on top of the other....like that.
I had asked him about it and he said it was very tough because he had dropped it a couple times, he told me he would ask the boss to get me the info...but he never did.
It might be discontinued now, but that is what I am looking for. I found a "Military" issue laptop like this but it was made to be dropped out of plane, and weighs 20 lbs, all for 7000$USD (for a used machine).
I don't even have a pic, tryed 3000 laptop sites and now my popup filter is working overtime, there has to an easier way.
Anybody...Please....pic and or link.......Thanx
Joe

You want a Tablet. Runs on Tablet XP, we use Fujitsu 4000 series, the new one is a 5000 series.

Handle sounds tile a Panasonic convertable, the screen reverses so it can be used like a laptop or tablet.

Tablet

Toshiba

and Panasonic

http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/s...atGroupId=12871

among others offer these.

Those are the "big 3" players in the tablet market.

Sounds like a panasonic toughbook. I don't know if they make them anymore though. But they were 'tough'.

Hi
I did the research on the tablet stuff, but can't say I was impressed with the price vrs product ratio. They seem to be an over priced fancy screen laptop...except this...

toughbook

This looks like the machine I need, whith a serial port and windows OP, very good for the OBD2 interfaces for lots of different softs. But where the F**K is the USB port ?/?
I don't mind the money if it can be added. Printer a must.
This machine has a nice look for business, very professional "high tech" look for the customers.

Then they're these "Notebooks" that seem to kick some ass...this one runs Windows OP...

Notebook

I am very good at making do with a PC when its in my hands, but I know nothing about this...I am a real newbe...gotta get help pray.gif
I will run a small business from this machine (which ever I choose) so of course pics, invoices, accounting soft, Internet not needed, CD/DVD/ not needed, serial and USB ports a MUST, maybe a way to make a usbtoserialorvisaversa thingee...all OBD2 stuff are using these ports. The older softs use serial, and the newer stuff use USB, I have to mention that most carsofts list warnings on using convertors...both would save my ass. ph34r.gif bare bones just the USB is min.

I have the usual techy friends but they help more on software...any advice/comment/trythislink/ is welcome
pray.gif
I would like to have a solid machine for the business and in the past I have heard more then once AFTER I bought something someone will say " why didn't you ..." too late...

At 1 am Sat nite, I think I can find a Techy here if I can stay awake, I'm gettin old... givemebeer.gif

Thanx for the links and help from the people that replyed, I found excactly what I was talking about, I have even asked a local PC hotspot retailer to look into a quote, 2 days later he wanted to sell me a laptop...he had some good reasons.... confused24.gif But he couldn't find what I was descibing - Tablet. I'm confused or tired..

Thanx again
Joe

Joe,

I cannot find them on evilBay right now, but I've seen the laptops you are speaking of....I bid on one a few weeks ago, lost the auction, they normally go for a few hundred bucks......when I find/remember the name, I'll post it....

i think, if you read that description very carefully, that product is *not* a computer. it is a *remote display and touchpad* for a central computer that sits elsewhere (within 300 feet). notice it also has no memory and no disk drive...

what they want you to do is buy the "real" Toughbook PC and sit it in a safe place, and then go roaming around with this portable input device. probably not what you're looking for.

the tablet PC thing is pretty new (again...) i think you need to be prepared to pay a (hefty) premium for the integrated touch panel. i worked with touch panel technologies almost 25 years ago when it was all custom code and specialised (expensive) industrial devices.

Serial port is a "legacy" device. The Microsoft standard for Tablet XP specifically excludes any "Legacy" device. At least that is what the players told us when we were buying. We use a conversion cable on our Troy 612/512 printers and it works fine. My VAG-COM is USB. Heck none of my newer computers have a serial port.

Tablets are still priced at a bit of a premium, but if it is what you need it is what you need. You can have small and portable, or you can have desktop replacement, you cannot have both due to cooling/power issues.

The input panel you listed is available with a super mini tower (at least it was 2 years ago) very unimpressive range, it would lose connection if you walked out one door of a large conference room and back in the other.

The local police use the Panasonic Toughbook in the squads. The are very tough and can take a lot of abuse. Here is a list of them and you look at the individual specs (and yes they have a USB and serial port). They also have touch screens but I don't know about all models and some have wireless built in.

HMM, looks remarkably like the very same page I posted? biggrin.gif

One thing to keep in mind about the
"NON-Tablet" touch screens is that they will usually react to ANY object, the tablet XP ones will only react to a Tablet XP pen. That may or may not be desirable.

The ruggedized toughbooks (not all of them are, and the CF23's we had were not at all tough) are quite heavy.

Properly confused yet? confused24.gif

Also, you may be able to order a transreflective screen, which is pretty amazing in sunlight if you envision using it outside much.

Hi People
My research led me to these type of machines.
HP TR 3000 = 1200$
Intermac = 200$

Obviously one is older, but I don't understand the different OP systems. Windows tablet PC (standard) and Windows 2000 pro embedded, this I never heard of confused24.gif
Some links

tablet#1

tablet#2

Can someone explain what the differences are and if the Embedded OP is old and outdated?
I am learning
Thanx

Hey Joe,

Windows tablet is I believe some very reduced version of Windows XP.

Windows 2000 is still considered by many the best OS that Microsoft did, really stable and without the whole graphics shit to slow things down.

If you want I can forward you the e-mail of a fellow teener (with a Chalon) that works for HP here in Montreal, maybe he can help you out or can point you towards the right guy.

I have no idea about the Embedded 2000, but Tablet XP is a full featured verson of XP pro with the handwriting/speech reconition and required touchscreen components.

Tablet XP will do evey thing Pro will do.
