SirAndy
If you are the sort of person that likes to get up early, what time do you usually start browsing 914world?

The reason i'm asking, i'm thinking about adding a daily backup to the 914world database and the by far easiest way to do that is to bring down the server for 5 minutes and do a low level backup of the database instead of trying to cobble together a "live" backup.

If there's enough of a window between midnight on the US west coast and early morning in Europe, that might be a good time to do that.

Hi. I check 914world forum often after waking up. Still in bed ...phonebrowser....not waking up the rest here. That would be 0600-0700 cet NL time. (Amsterdam). Today still browsing at 08.15 in the morning is not very common...I should be on my way to work smile.gif

Offline backups are easier to restore smile.gif
Thanks for asking us Europeans !

So For Frank that should be -8 hours pacific time.
Midnight pacific = 4:00 pm Amsterdam right?

Where I live close to Toronto Canada (same TZ as the whole US eastern seaboard) Pacific time is -3 hours .

I check in a couple of times a day usually in the morning around 08:00 GMT and agin later in the afternoon between 13:00 and 16:00 GMT.

I start when I eat breakfast, around 6am on weekdays. Then a check in a few times during the day.

I recon I'm a typical world member in the mornings much to my wife's annoyance. Make coffee & look at 914 porn in bed at 7-7:30 GMT timeframe

No time is good as early AM europe clashes with evening West Coast

If you went for something like 5am Amsterdam that's 8PM San Fran, that's prime 914 World viewing

Probably counter intuitive but 10am Amsterdam / Germany (9am GMT) etc is 1am west coast?

Europe is up, had the early 914 fix, dealing with the daily flood of crap emails at work, east cost is snoozing in bed, west coast 914 world goes off line 1am = reminder you have work in the morning

If we are talking 5-10min back up I doubt few in Europe would notice at 9am GMT / 10am Europe / most on the west coast would be also off line by then

My 2 cents (Euro cent)

Just my $.02 is that even if it was smack in my prime viewing time, it's only 5 mins or so.

IMO, since there's never a "perfect" time for this sort of thing, once we all know the downtime schedule, we can adjust accordingly.

I fully trust that Andy will do what's best and with as little negative impact as possible.

Build a '914World is down for backup' page and put a button 'I want in!'. Then just track how many times it's clicked. biggrin.gif

I think SixerJ is on to something, around 9-10am UTC would put most Americans in the snooze zone while most Europeans should be at work already.

Unfortunately, that would put Australia and New Zealand right around 9pm or so.

Now take that idea and make it WAY too complicated. Implement some machine learning so it'll choose the time to run the backup automatically based on how many people are clicking the button. av-943.gif

Vast bulk of users have to be in NA, then Europe, then APACJ

Schedule for minimal impact to minimal number of users and always at the same time, everyone gets used to it being down and stops questions being asked why the site is down (sorry APACJ).

Use the time to make coffee, make love, pour a glass of wine, smoke.gif, play with the dog, placate the significant other...work on the car?

Having the site down might push along the projects smash.gif lol-2.gif
