Stopping power.

Using R-4 pads all around with Motul fluid.

Can't wait to take it deep into the turns.

I'm very excited about using them at Marina, as it tends to be a very tight and quick course.

I have stock Pagid pads on what is basicly a 911S brake set up. Me & a buddy did 150 minutes (2 tankfulls) one DE day at PIR.....and that was on 225 Hoosiers.
No brake fade....they got to stinkin' some, but no fade.

Sticky tiars & good pads transfer more weight onto the fronts....at the expense of unloading the rears....get it?

It's too much gas in the turns that gets me, anyway.

Are these pads strictly for the track or can they be used for the street. I got stock pads and a really bad brake squeel problem.

This is a guess. I think they will wear out the rotors faster and the pads will not last as long as OEM. My guess.

Stopping power, though. Ahhhhhh!
I'll use 'em on the street.

here's my input. For track they are probably awesome. AX they are hard to modulate. Very easy to lock up at low speeds. They squeak like hell when your rotors are worn.

and i *thought* it was your habit to brake in the corners instead of the straights ...

in which case the bigger brakes will make you spin even faster!

could be - i haven't used them.
but *typically* - the way track pads work is that - like race tires - they need a certain (high) temperature to work. they remain very grippy at elevated temps but have basically NO grip when cold.

Porterfield makes -4- compounds in sizes we care about.
there is the Race pad
there is the Endurance Race pad
there is the Vintage Race pad
there is the Street pad.

i'm thinking street is the hot ticket for AX, and i plan to try Vintage Race for DE.

your mileage may vary, but if you're using pads designed for the track on the street, or AX -- watch for that first stop!

Livermore performace is where I got my R4S(f-$64,r-$59)... they have the R4 also (f-$87,r-$91)

Sean mentioned them a year ago...

Thanks for the heads up on the price. I don't mind supporting the 914 specialist, for a few extra bucks.

Mark, yes. That air was coming from behind the bleeder valve threads.

The Porterfields get better when hot, yes, but they are much better then what was on there right out of the box.

Didn't feel like I was being unsafe on any level.
If I drag my brakes around the paddock before my first a/x run, they'll be hot when I need them.

BTW, I'm not saying, " Hey everybody, go out, buy and install race pads".

My car is seeing very few local street miles now.
I trailer to the a/x and track, which is why I have these pads.

I hear the Hawk Performance HPS pads are good for street use, not sure about the track. I think I have a semi-race pad now on my street car...don't bite for S untill heated and squeel like the dickens when doing a slow stop. A switch to Porterfield or Hawk street pads might be the ticket.

Hawk HPS are good street pads, comparable to the Porterfield R4-S. And yes, I am saying this from direct experience. They don't make a Hawk pad for the 914 rear though.


I got my pads at Livermore Performance, a place I thought I had discovered, but I guess others here have already heard of them. They seemed like good people.

they were good people to me... I wasn't 100% sure which pads I actually needed since my car is a mid-72, and use the 73+ calipers... they knew, and made sure I got the right ones....

trek -- did you toss the prop valve and use a T?

I added the Porterfield R4S pads to the 914 when I did the brake job last week.

Had them on the 308, had to do a panic stop on the mountain road to Cripple Creek to avoid hitting some moron stopped in the middle of the road to look at Deer or something......thought my eyeballs were going to pop out!!

If I get the SS lines, then maybe I'll try the "tee".
The feel with the prop valve in place is very good.

I'm pretty sure that you can turn the 914 front pads into rear pads by opening up one of the holes for the pins....pads are identical except for one hole on each pad.....

That's what I remember reading on the site before, but it's not true. The rear pads are physically smaller. I think the rear pads from some makers are 911(?) pads because the rear Porterfields I got had the same size holes rather than one small and one large hole so I had to enlarge one hole on each pad.

The front 914 pads are much bigger than the stock 914 rear pads. We have to drill out all the Porterfield *rear* pads.
