Just wondering if Porsche had a tendency to omit a digit from the engine number. In my case a zero. Mine reads GA 014570 but all the lists I've seen read GA 0006766 to GA 0015021. Also, how does this number correlate to the engine number 007830 on my COA? I know the engine was rebuilt, just trying to figure out what is actually under the hood. Thanks in advance for any input!
Jon,
Your GA014570 falls before the end of the run you referenced up to 0015021 by 451 units, although I'm not sure what list of engine codes you're referring to, since there are a couple of them out there.
http://www.914world.com/specs/productionnumbers.phpPer the above link's production numbers: 914-2.0 73-74 production was 21,456 for 1972, 1973 + some portion of 1974's 5,597 2.0's which were 74 MY GAs - so there has to be more than 15021 GA motors to build say +/- 24,000 73 & 74 2Ls - not to mention overage production which was used for factory exchange engines.
Since your VIN ends ...01620 - that means it's an early 74 MY 914 with maybe +/- half being 2.0's as a WAG estimate, that puts it within the 4817 (1972) + 9785 of the 1973 production nos.
However, note that the engine case nos. were not necessarily sequential & following the VINs nor production nos. - but the stage of production seems right for your VIN roughly speaking.
So my guess is that the person doing your COA made a mistake by listing 007830 on your COA. They make a ton of mistakes because frankly the PCNA COA operation is a half-fast program, & the people doing them really don't seem to care much about getting things right the first time.
I suggest that you take a clean pic of your case & VIN numbers, & of the erroneous COA, then send an email to the PCNA COA Dept. & ask them to correct their error. Usually they require 914-2.0 owners to supply those pix with their COA application or by follow-up email (I had to do so), so there is no excuse if they already had your pix - so make that point too.
If the person who handles it refuses to do the correction, then ask for the COA manger. If that still doesn't work, then shoot me a PM or email & I'll help you with process for taking it up the ladder at PCNA.
I had to send mine back 3x before they got it correct, & had to write to the GM of Customer Care to overrule the COA Mgr. - which he did, & refunded my fee for my inconvenience. It's just too bad that the line people doing the COAs don't have a better attitude!
One other possibility could be, that at some point yours got a factory exchange engine with a higher or lower case number than the original - but then they should be able to give both the original & the exchanged engine numbers on the COA.
Good Luck!
Tom
