The numbers on my '73 seem odd

VIN - 4732903052
Engine - GA000435
Transaxle - 914/11 HAO053820

Original owner says trans is original so

914/11 would make it pre '73

053820 would make it seem like a '73 1.7 litre
trans

COA shows engine as original which makes it a 2.0l car.

But original owner says trans was never changed so what's going on?

Build completion date is September of '72 and trans is a side shift.

There's no such thing as a "1.7 trans".

You have an early-ish 73 2.0 with the appropriate side-shift transmission. All is fine.

My '73 is VIN 4732901012 and my original 2.0 engine is GA000501.

All the documentation I can find shows the 914/11 designation as being a 72 or earlier trans.

Bigporsche website shows '73 1.7 transaxles as having a HAO 053072 up to HAO 056362 designation and the 2l cars as having HA 01013 up to HA 31073 designation.

I was just wondering if anyone had any insight to the 914/11 designation for what is clearly a side shift trans in a '73 that should by all documentation I can find have the 914/12 designation.

If you do the Chassis No. translation, you'lll find yours was built in Aug `72 I think (maybe July), so they were probably using up /11 transmission cases to make the early side-shifts for `73 MY. IIRC my original case was also a /11, but later rebuilt in `82 with a /11 used case (I bought mine in 12/75 from the OO).

You probably also have the chrome door handles & window cranks carried over from 72 MY to early 73's, you may also have mixed early & late brake calipers (my 8/31/72 build date has late fronts w/ 2 bleeders & late rears w/ 1 bleeder), & may have originally had the rare early-73 only vinyl on the A-pillars/windshield frame (if repainted, look under the targa top/windshield frame seals for evidence/remnants)

Do a google search for it to find the few topics on here about the first 1000 [or more] 73 914s) with the A-pillar vinyl & other quirks. These are one at w914world & one at 914club, & a pic of one a bit later than yours formally here in SoCal/OC. My 73 2L had early "late" doors with late scissor lifts/regulators but no crossbars/safety-beams, early chrome door handles/window cranks, A-pillar vinyl, & mixed early/late brake calipers, & some other quirks.

Also note, that engines, transaxles, bodies/chassis nos. & VINs are not necessarily ina sequential order from the factory, since they just grabbed the next or closest part; & note that most COAs/Kardexes don't list the trans case nos.

Chassis No. translation (on Karman Plate in F-driver door jamb & stamped in rear floor of R trunk) -

Get an online 1972 calendar to count weeks & start week #1 with 1/1 even if not a full week -

However, a correction to the above chart, note that the 9X actually applies more to 73 & 74 MY when they were building more 914s per day -
so 95 is the Karmann Plant,
95+1 = 96 is to add 100 to the last XX number that day,
95+2 = 97 for 200+XX number built that day, etc.
