FYI - This turned up in one of the GSA auction emails for properties & vehicles that I get, & thought some of you German vehicle fans might find it interesting the way it's set up as a tow/recovery vehicle.

Who knows, someone here might want it for when their 914 gets stuck off-road or road breakdown!? confused24.gif

They are slooooooow. No, seriously, did i mention that they are slow?

Great if you have a couple of 100 acres and want something that can get you anywhere.

Not so great if you're thinking about driving it somewhere a 100 miles away. Or 50. Or 20.

Andy,

They have a Unimog gathering up in our SoCal mountains at Big Bear - or used to do, & some of those guys drive them more than 100-200 miles up to it, while others trailer.

One of my buddies had one, & we'd take our time going anywhere in on the road, but the gearing was great on off-road rocky terrain etc. for which it was designed. He said that they could be had with either on road or off road gearing sets, depending upon their use.

In comparison to a VW Westy .... Unimogs are only marginally slower! biggrin.gif

1989 model, 56 miles, guess it didn't take the military too long to figure out they WERE really slow either....but by that time, they'ed bought a nice round 1,000??!

I had a good friend years ago who used to buy a bunch of military stuff and I found a lot of the military purchases insanely wasteful.

Not ment to go fast, meant to move hardware and repair other trucks, tanks, etc.... Fork lift and crane, it was used more than likely 100 yards at a time at most.

The crane would make a great addition to an HEMVTT, but not at 9K, the Benz diesel repairs will also eat you alive if you don't do them yourself.

Recovery is mainly done by the M88a2 or HEMVTT M984A4 depending on the situation and what your trying to get out of where.

Exactly my point, just making sure people aren't thinking "Oh look, another cool German SUV"

I really don't think there is any danger of that, once they look at the pix Andy!

Although they may think - "Oh look, a cool off-road utility/work vehicle"!
Just as they would if I posted a vintage "Deuce-&-a-Half"!
