Help ! Looking for 5 1/4" replacement glass for door mirrors ('73-'76).
Ordered two "rare finds" from ** for $24.50 each, plus ship & guess what ? screwed again ! They sent 1/8" glass, so are loose in the frames when installed. Sent 'em back.
The glass needs to be approx. 3/16" to fit snugly.
Any ideas ?

About 10 years ago maybe longer my local glass shop cut me out ones for my mirrors.. Strange if they can't still do that..?

Yes, Auto Atlanta sells the 73-76 pre-cut glass, & IIRC also the smaller early 70-72 mirror glass too. They may also carry replacement mirror glass seals, or maybe 914Rubber - which is worth getting "while you're in there."

Or a local auto glass or glass & mirror shop should be able to cut them for you, but you'll need to carefully take out the old one(s) as patterns, or make an exact patter - but make sure that they use an auto/exterior rated mirror/silvering of the same thickness (interior grade will go bad very quickly on a car in the elements & driving).

Mirror glass can be tricky. It seems the new glass is NOT as thick as the original glass from the 70's. I bought mirrors from both AA and Sierra Madre. Neither replacement glass is the correct thickness. I used some rubber to shim the mirror out to fit frame. I would take my old glass to the glass place and see if they can match the thickness. One glass shop said they would make them BUT they had to be made from OEM mirror glass for safety reasons and liability. See where your journey leads you.

These do seem to stay in one piece when broken. If Mikey doesnt do them, I'm going to see about getting some made with the correct glass. But Im in no rush so I'm hoping 914rubber will make them first.
It is a pet peeve of mine that most of the resto parts made, dont fit quite right. Even worse when the seller pretends otherwise.

Next week I will take mine to a glass shop for a price check and if they can do them.. I will get a price and see if everyone wants one and have them cut them for me..

1/8" should work, do you still have the inside gasket that the glass sits in (translucent white color) inside the mirror?

Yep... plastic liner still intact, as well as black plastic band that holds it in.
correction...glass needs to be about 5/32" to be snug, not 3/16".
Of course OEM European glass would be metric, not in inches.
Bottom line is... whatever the original metric thickness was, is what the replacement needs to be for a proper fit.
Although I'll probably end up with something thinner & shim it up snug with double sided foam tape or something sticky, cushy.

I can do these as I gave a glass account through the architectural products business, so no problem. I'll get this back out tomorrow. They are relatively inexpensive for material. just a matter of getting the glass in.

Every mirror that has broke or cracked on me was just regular glass
Never have broken one on a 914, but I have on VW's, it wasn't tempered.

I just took mine into a glass shop....they cut to match, fit perfect at a price of $15.00. Mine is a 74, there is a plastic formed ring the glass sits in. Best, Mark

Update on correct thickness: I now have 2 pieces of mirror glass & some calipers in my hands, so here's what... OEM glass for the late ('73- '76) 914's is 4/32 or 1/8".
The glass sold by ** to me was 3/32". If it's not 4/32" it will not fit properly in the factory frames. You can probably use the 3/32" glass if you stick some foam on the back side to shim it up snug,
Until 914 Rubber gets these made, we can use the AA glass & shim it.
I'm going to contact a "Big City" auto glass & mirror shop & see if they can knock out some nice replacement pieces for a reasonable price,
If so, I'll update this thread with the info.

Looks like I can do these. $15 a pop. will take me about a week to have ready.

Funny I just looked into it as well and with similar pricing without shipping in correct thickness. Its all yours though.
