Hi all,

I bought what I thought and was advertised as a set of 914 2.0 heat exchangers on eBay, but when installing (after I took the time to refinish them) I noticed they appear to be 1.7/1.8 exchangers. I now see the swooped up end compared to my old set. My mistake in believing the seller.

The weird bit is the flange that attaches to the head. In all the photos I can find of 914 exchangers none look like this. They don't have the leeway in install that the others I see have, since they are holes instead of slots.

Anyone know what these actually are? They are not stainless, a magnet stuck. The silver set is 2mm smaller I.D.

Trying to figure it out, so I can either use them, or sell them properly.

The sliver are the ones in question, the others are the old 2.0's.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Anyone have a nice set of 2.0's for sale? :-)

This is the flange I'm unsure about:

Here's the bit that makes me believe they are 1.8 HEs:

They are 1.7/1.8

I used to buy 914 stuff on ebay until I found this site.

Thanks for the responses guys. Any thoughts on the difference in that flange that meets the head? I can't find another photo in my searches that show one like it for a 914.

The silver ones use a cast end are like any 1.7 / 1.8 / VW 412 / Type 2 I've had so far.

The 2.0 has larger exhaust ports so I'm not sure if the 1.7 / 1.8 will seal.

IIRC....the OD is the same for both exchangers...the ID on the 2.0 is bigger...you have both there, measure them to confirm.

I think the cast ends are better as they provide a better seal at the head. If the 1.7 HE are in good shape I.d run them. You will need tje 1.7 1.8 muff brackets which are different. I believe Bruce Stone has a few he would part with.

You got some 1.7L heat exchangers. 1.8 have larger pipes. The tubes are smaller than the 1.8 and 2.0L. I do not have any 2.0 heat exchangers.

Do you have a 2.0 muffler and 2.0 muffler bracket?

I believe the original exchangers on my '71 had those holes instead of slots where you mounted to the head. Still have them in the attic somewhere and could confirm.

Thanks for the info all! Yes I do have the 2.0 bracket and a nearly new 2.0 Bursch muffler.

So due to that smaller inner diameter of the pipe, it would be unwise to use these on my 2.0 I'm guessing? I'd have to source a 1.7 bracket and muffler as well. Easier/cheaper than finding a set of 2.0 HEs though it seems.

Ideally, I would be able to find a nice set of 2.0's and sell these to someone who needs them. They seem to be pretty thin on the ground at the moment if you can't swing 2K.
