Full Version: Rear trunk floor temp?

How hot does your rear trunk floor get after a drive? Mine gets pretty hot, around 35-40C even tho the air temperature is only around 15-20 C.

Spoke
The trunk floor does get warm. Not sure of the absolute temperature though. Do you have the muffler shield attached?

Between the heat coming out from below the engine and the muffler, it does get warm. Not a good idea to put groceries in the rear trunk when shopping. smile.gif

I always thought with a slight mod, the 914 would make a good pizza delivery car. smile.gif

You put the pizza in the trunk and the beer in the frunk...

It's the automotive equivalent of the McDLT:

The early Boxster had similar criticism, IIRC.

Yes I have a non stock heatshield but was still a bit suprised at the temps.

Yeah, the floor gets toasty. I have to remember not to put heat sensitive items back there. Like beer. 20 degrees is OK, but 37 isn't.

this just the reason the mostly yellow now, usually gone, water adsorbing mat was under the carpet in the rear trunk....to keep your parcels from melting biggrin.gif

Do you also have the factory insulation mat under the rear trunk carpet? I don't know how effective it is, but obviously the factory knew heat was a problem. There were a couple of different approaches to this by the factory. My 76 has a black plastic covered foam pad that covers the entire trunk floor under the carpet.

I dont have a trunk carpet at all, might have to get one.

Mats you need the insulation pad more than the carpet.
It's pretty thick.

I'd lose a lot of tips. The pizza would always be stale by the time I showed up.

I need one of those
Mikey914
Yes many do. Actually molded not just cut fabric. We've been working on the material that will be used for the insulation. I have a choice of a few materials, I've eliminated one, and think that we've got it narrowed down.

this is the insulation pad with like a plastic cover and there is another one that is a thick rubber that I had in my 75 1.8 that I sold last June. The rubber pad came from pre 75 car.

Here is a page from "The 914/914-6 Porsche Restorer's Guide" with a brief description of the insulation.
