Greetings from Munich again gentlemen, and the odd lady or two!

Can someone tell me what's up with the trip odometer on my KM speedo gauge? Is there seriously no reset button?

There should be a small knurled knob just beneath the knee pad on the metal portion of the dash below the Odo.

Mostly the knob is missing ,if you have the cable you can turn it back fine without it.....calling Mr Whitesell you need to make these,I seem to remember they lock on the shaft of the cable with a small set screw.

Early trip odometer reset cables were longer and used a metal knob with set screw. Later ones, like my '74s, used a friction fit black plastic knob. I think the change was after 1971 but someone please correct me.

If you have an AC unit, the later cable is too short and might be lurking somewhere under the dash. Mine was.

The late ‘73 I sold last week had the metal knob.

My April '73 (not sure if that is early or late) has the metal knob.

Metal knobs through 73, most 74s I have parted had the black plastic knob.

Mike there should be a cable out the back of the speedo that runs down to the lower dash pad kind close to where your right knee would be while driving. If it is not there you will see / feel a hole in lower pad.

If you find there is a knob DO NOT TURN IT WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION!!! It can and most likely will cause the odometer gear to strip and then your odometer will not work anymore.

I have a 6" to 7" black cable and a metal piece rod at the end.. it looks like its beveled perhaps to accept a knob.. i am afraid to turn for fear that it will damage something.. I dont have a way of posting a pic but i also want to reset my speedo odometer to zero since i rebuilt my motor.. does anyone know how to do this ?

The cable is for trip odometer reset. You would need to disassemble the speedometer in order to reset the odometer to 00000.

That cable.. do I turn it clockwise, counterclockwise or pull on it to reset the trip meter

Turn clockwise to reset...keep turning until all the numerals are caught and reset to zero. As has been cautioned before, don't reset the trip odometer (after you reinstall) when the car is moving. There is a good article in the archives here or on the Pelican forum about speedometer repair. I followed the thread and repaired my non-working odometer a couple of years ago. Still works great.

I got it... the last digit next to the red tenths doesnt want to budge to "0" but that is ok.... it shows 2 miles on the trip meter... i sure would like to zero it out on the odometer end. What grease did you use.. i read somewhere that the lithium grease is not good to use... what do you suggest ?

That would be mine. I just used general multipurpose bearing grease only because that's what the old stuff looked like. Don't know if that was best though.
