Hey Guys,

Any suggestions on what oil filter to use / where to purchase them? This is for a stock '74 2.0.

Thanks,

Mike

Mahle....Pelican and the others carry them.

OEM only--Mann, Mahle or Knecht. Carried by your favorite on-line sources, most Porsche specialty shops, the dealer (sometimes), and usually some VW specialty shops. I don't think any chain auto parts stores (ChAPS?) carry them. If you can't get OEM, Purolator is probably OK, but the OEM ones are preferred. Fram is junk IMHO and shouldn't even be used on your lawnmower. Or your Honda! wink.gif

I buy in lots of six filters, and buy a new lot when I use the next-to-last or last one.

im runnning fram- someone said the "f-in explode", is this true? in the past ive used a bosch filters. are these good?

dave- whens the last time you had to buy an oil filter for your 914? (must use alot of oil when it doesnt run laugh.gif ) just teasing ya

I know several people who have had Fram filters explode. Literally. Not so good for your motor--and the rest of the guys in your run session really don't like missing 10 minutes of run time while the safety crew cleans up the mess!! (Well, one of them did burst on the street, but the others were on the track.)

Oh, and at least one person caught the Fram before it blew, but it had "ballooned" noticeably.

Don't know about Bosch filters.

And as for the number of filters my car uses nowadays.... Welllll.....

Use the Mahle oil filters. Good OEM product that works and they are inexpensive (unless you buy them from Pelican).

There are numerous online sources that will get you six Mahle oil filters delivered to your door (shipping price included) for less than $25.

I've never seen a Fram filter for a 914, but it must be really small. I've used both a Mann and a Knecht/Mahle. Those are both about the same size.

I've never seen a Fram explode on any car but if you inspect a Fram and a German made filter you'll see that the Fram is missing the mechanical pressure bypass valve. Go with a German filter on a German car.

I'm trying the K&N oil filters. So far no problems. Anybody else using K&N oil filters?

Ive gone throught two K and N oil filters. They have worked for me. Only reason I use em is cause I couldnt get a Mahle right away. BTW, I took off the Fram on my Subaru that was about 4000 miles old, and I could crush it in my bare hand.
