Why do people pile stuff all over these cars ? don't they know that is what the trunks are for ?
Looks like a nice find. Can't really say it is bone stock with different engine, painted bumpers and no sail panel vinyl.

That's right. Go Dawgs, Sic em! I would put a license plate frame for the dealership on it, but I just can't have that on my car.

Its been in my garage for way too long. We got the house in part for the 3rd garage, but 2 kids, opening my own firm, and life in general has delayed the process.

The "bone stock" should have been "base model." Non-appearance group, so no sail panel vinyl. Other than the engine and an aftermarket radio, there are no real mods from stock.

I'm confident that I (or someone who knows what they're doing) can work out the bumper, but what about the bumper top? Is this done for or is there some hope?

It's a dead stock early car without appearance group.
Body color sail trim and bumpers, no sail vinyl. Dog dish hubcaps.
There was an identical car in my town long ago.

Alright, the next step is to get some new rings on the pistons and get the top end put back together. Now this s question might generate some heated responses, but here it goes- Should I lap in the cylinders on the heads or is that not necessary?

Getting the heads prepped for assembly-

Is the gunk in the pushrod tubes area ok to leave or should it be cleaned out?

Do the heads need hot-tanked? Simple Green had no effect on the gunk.

Looks like maybe some old-timers Gasket Shellac was used on the seals..or dino oil that has cooked for a long time

Great find...have fun on your restoration...

The next step is putting the jugs onto the case. I have shims in between, so should I use any sealant or should I just make sure the mating surfaces are good and clean?

No sealant. Old school technique is to clean everything up really good, and lap the barrels to the case with valve lapping compound, but you've got to have the head studs off, which to me isn't worth the trouble.

These cases have been know to have trouble with the barrel (cylinder) registers (mounting surface) sinking and causing leaks. You might want to lay a known precise straight edge across the cylinder registers and shine a light across to see if it's nice and flat, if it's not you could have troubles

Thanks Perry! Piston rings are going together just fine. Maybe by the time everyone else is driving space ships, I’ll have this thing back on the road.

And in the village, there was much rejoicing! After 10 years, parts are finally going back together.

A huge thanks to Perry Kiehl at Iron Hill Restorations for the head nuts. I forgot to take a picture of them before I put them on, but you'll see how nice and shiny they are in a minute.
