Are there any shift pattern "plates" available that display our 914 shift pattern?

I have the 917 wood knob...In the rare event i may leave my car with a valet or let a hot chick try to drive it they don't know the pattern.

Maybe somebody can create a small plate (group buy?) with an engraved pattern that can be mounted to the dash?

Any ideas?

Gary - Aside from Elliot's well placed comment ....

IIRC there were 911/912 shift pattern decals &/or plates for their optional 5-speed 901 tranny (same pattern on 914s), so try looking at the Porsche Classic parts, Einmalig in Huntington Beach, & the other Porsche parts houses for one.

Back in the day most folks just used either the factory Bakelite knob or the AMCO aftermarket Leather wrapped or Walnut ones with the shift pattern, if they needed clues.

Back in the day I never let a valet park my car, but do admit to letting 1 or 3 girlfriends, a fiancee, & 2 wives drive it. At worst, they started in 2nd where they thought 1st would be!

I have the leather wrapped AMCO knob with the Porsche crest - so also "blind" to the pattern.

There are some members doing CNC & die-cut stuff on here, so maybe someone will step up, if you can't find the 911/912 ones.

I see that you're on the LA to Canada Freeway (local radio ad), so Einmalig & Sierra Madre in Pas are close to you. Some online searches will save you time & miles though.

I do the 911 and 914 ones in Delrin. The real issue is the insert needs the base to be machined. Which would require you to send the knob in.

Also gonna have the 911 and 914 knobs (with option for set screw) on sale for black Friday.

I always thought that to steal a 914 you better put it on a trailer

Even if you have the key still takes me 5-10 mins driving to
Adjust to the car and forget about driving the work truck

The title of your post led me to believe that (like me) you have trouble with your memory. I was going to recommend the shift pattern on a tattoo on the back of your hand but thought better of it. av-943.gif

Went somewhere several years back with my son. We parked and he ask why I didn't lock the car.

I told him that should a thief figure out how to start it, he would play hell figuring out how to shift the gears.

Well the main thought is I want to teach my son stick. Valet would be a nice option at certain times. Still too uncertain

My know is the 917 knob VaccaRabitte makes. Got it a couple buys ago. Love it and don't want to change or cut the top.

Maybe just the insert by itself velcroed to the dash?

ok, don't laugh....when i first bought the car and new to Porsche and VW and all that.... I did Sharpie the pattern on my hand. Didn't start in 2nd...started in Reverse....not good.

I couldn't do with out the shift pattern as much as I like wooden ones,hell I have to keep reminding myself I have a dogleg gearbox lol-2.gif lol-2.gif .

But if you were an instrument rated pilot

? Anybody

Could you fly a small plane with out all the labels
On the guages .

Im sure you could , except fuel guage

Years ago, aircraft instrument panels were standardized to what was eventually called a "six Pack". You could go from one model airplane to another and still pretty much expect the flight instruments to be in the same position relative to each other. Even the new "glass cockpits" have the flight instruments in the same configuration. My airplane doesn't have any flight instruments 'cause nobody pays me to fly in bad weather anymore. biggrin.gif smoke.gif No labels needed. smile.gif

You mainly just use the 6pack

And i thought even if you fly in good weather or visual flight

Just like JFK Jr. Mr. Halladay was a very low hour pilot flying a airplane that was beyond there skill level which in both cases over confidence led to fatal decisions. JFK not being IFR rated to which his airplane was equipped for and who was flying at the limits of if not beyond VFR. Roy Halladay was show boating going from several 100 feet above the water down to 5 feet above the water.

I cannot say exactly but from what i hear

Was flying at night
Was flying compared to his old plane and level of experience
A Hot ship """""""

Was told bad weather comin by other guys at airport who canceled their flight that day
Did not file a flight plan
Was not instrument rated
Turned down the offer of a experiened instrument rated pilot at the airport
Offer to go with him as help to fly just in case

Sat in front of plane alone no one to help him keep track of things

With all that working against him before the wheels up

You have to wonder if he even had a 50% chance of making it WTF.gif


THE holliday crash i dont know much about
But if he was flying straight lines I'm sure it would be much safer
Then flying stunts ,aerobatics high g pullouts being (verner voss)
Would you do what he was doing if your flying the spruce goose
I doubt it ,

But coolest thing in the world would be to get two of these litlle
Sea plane 1 seaters and flying around doing acm mock combat
Id pay big money to do that

I'm sure it would be very fun and very dangerous

The pattern on all 4 of my 914's has been so vague I'm betting the factory just gave up on figuring it out.....it would just be a cruel hoax to put a diagram there av-943.gif

I thought no pattern would be a theft deterrent. I’ve used a Momo for years.
I just grab the knob and use “the force” to tell me what gear I’m in. Just like welding in the dark.

What to do if your knob doesn’t have it. Here’s a totally off the wall thought; how about buying one with the shift pattern? Too easy? Yeah, probably. Never mind.

None of my manual cars have a shift pattern on the knob.
Thats one of the first thing that goes whenever I buy a car. I sit there as soon as I get home and think "what do I have that would make an awesome knob for my new car."

My 914 has had at least 4 knobs, and my WRX has had about 6. They are fun to make.

I do want to find a way to cheaply make or buy inserts, but there has never been much clamor for them.
