Hi everyone,

We just started the metal work on the fenders today. I can't express how cool this is! http://www.2002and914.com/?page_id=304

We've been working on this for a couple of years now. Got the motor, transmission, front and rear suspension done. Only thing left is the interior, body work and paint. And then of course, all the details.

If you're interested, poke around the site. If I misrepresented anything, please let me know. (but please don't flame me, just let me know) smile.gif

Looks like it’s in good hands.

yeah, it really is. Paint, no problem, I've got that covered. Body work, at this level, he's the man.

He just finished up restoring a late 50's sprint car. It came out amazing.

today we used the metal file to bring the work to as close to perfect as we could get before any plastic is used. It was really cool watching that being done, knowing how it felt before we started and how smooth it is now.

We're also going to be cutting out the small area of surface rust and welding in the patch. Once we're all finished, I will cover it with a catalyzed primer and then I'll start blocking out the rest of the car.

Progress pictures will be posted on the website this evening if anyone is interested.

One thing I have to say is that if you have never watched a real bodyman use metal files the old school way, you're missing out. Such an art form that is mostly lost on today's remove and replace panels.

Beautiful work. I agree re the metal files and actual craftsmanship versus the old bondo or remove and replace. Dying art form for sure.

When I asked him how old the files were, he said "A few years older than you are". So, at least 48 years but they are still sharp and surprisingly comfortable.

A lot of miles on them though, that's for sure.

For most of us who have never seen metal files in action, a short video would be enlightening! piratenanner.gif

We'll be working on the drivers side over the holiday, I will get that recorded.

The combination of the hammers, dollies and metal files is really cool.

Nice to see real metal work in action. The end result is always worth the time spent.

Hi Guys,

As promised, here's some videos of my father doing the metal work today. You can clearly see the progression between each one.

Final Metal Finish:

Hopefully, the links will work, the last one has the air compressor running in the background so it might be a little loud.

I will have pictures and such put up on the web site soon.

Went to the paint shop today to order a couple new blades for the flat file. The existing ones are still sharp but, not as sharp as they could be.

I stumped all the guys at the paint store, except one, with my request. Glad Chuco is working there, or it would have been very frustrating.

Will finish up the fenders on Thursday and then start blocking the entire car out.

Are these links working for anyone? I'd like to see this, but they don't seem to work for me.

Rob,

Are they not loading up, even to just a picture? Or is the video just not moving.

If it's not moving, just place your mouse on the picture that loaded and it should load up. They are, unfortunately, 4+ megs each so it might take a few seconds to get everything loaded up.

If the first frame picture is not even loading up, PM me and I'll send you .mp3 versions of them.

Hey Mike, I'm just getting a "Page cannot be displayed" error in IE and the equivalent "site cannot be reached" in Chrome.

Thank you, sir. Would definitely like to see this process in action.

Hi Rob,

I just sent you a PM with a direct download link for you.
