Gents..

I sourced another nice rear chrome bumper from a 73-4 914 and wondering what the market price is to pay for re-chromed bumpers?? $______ Need to know to keep DD or go CW chromed after I get some local chrome pricing.

Also, I have a pair of nice front & rear factory orig. bumper top seal pads??
I know about repo's but wondering what they are worth? $_____ Keep or throw away?

Parts pricing is a mystery now that 914's are growing in popularity popcorn[1].gif

Most shops will want to see the bumper to give you an estimate. When I brought a straight RV bumper to a well respected local chrome shop, they quoted me $700. With the current EPA regulations, chrome shops are becoming scarce and expensive.

I just had the pair of my originally painted 1970 bumpers chromed in Suwanee, Ga for $800. Perfect mirror finish.

Unless the bumpertops are trashed, they are worth keeping. If not for your car, then someone’s daily driver. if you think they are ok, they are probably very nice.

"Here is another idea which is what I did. I had a friend who works at a local body shop it's a national franchise one, asked did he have a good place to hammer out a few dents and rechrome my front bumper, no problem he sent it out to a place they have a contract with and added $50 on top of his cost for their shop total was $375 and it was perfect. The chromer was a place in Minnesota I will try to get the name of it and post it. Place was Keystone in Brainerd, MN"

I got a quote for $1200.00 to $1400.00 including refinishing dings and welding some holes.

I'm pretty pleased with the job Ogden Chrome did on mine:

$1400 for both. McMark filled in some holes and did some metal work prior to sending them to Ogden.

FYI...A quality shop here is so cal near LA should quote you $350-$450/ea barring any major dents or repairs.

I have 4 sets in process now...some early (sharp cornered) rears.

Hope to offer them before X'mas.

There is supposed to be a group buy going on those through Mark Henry.. I am not sure of status.. I think they look great though..

porschetub
Yes they should be great,Mark Henry has had them made and AA have them, depends who you buy off,not stating the obvious @ this point biggrin.gif .
There will never be a set price for chroming and if anyone did they wouldn't be in business long, the main cost is in the metal finishing, knocking out dents and fixing rust pitting costs labour ans really adds to the cost of the final job.

Hi Oscar,
Who doing that So Cal Chrome work?

I do in house repairs, straightening and blasting, then I send over to General Plating in Los Angeles for chrome.

jt914
I'd recommend El Monte Plating here in SoCal at around $300-350 including straightening last time I used them. I was very happy and would definitely recommend. When I was renting a hangar at the El Monte Airport over there many of the car guys also used El Monte.

I tried to save a few bucks once and I tried a place called Bumperman, at around $250 each was a good price. Came out OK for a daily driver but I was not as happy as the work that El Monte did.

If you are interested in Stainless Bumpers....
First I would check with Mark H. And next I would contact
Harrington Group, I would contact anyone else last.
Harrington makes the bumpers in Vietnam..
I bough a set directly from Harrington and they look great..

Status is they look great, but I wasn't happy with a bunch of little things mostly on the fronts. The topper holes were off and grill holes weren't trimmed out correctly being the worst offenders. This all added up to 6-8 hours of labour for me per set, times that by 20-30 sets was a no go for me.

They have stated the corrected sample will be ready for shipping next week, but shipping from Nam is about 3 weeks. So if even if every thing is good we are looking at 8-10 plus weeks before I would be ready to ship the first batch. I will update as soon as I've seen and test fit the next set of samples.

For CW bumpers you will have to go the rechrome route, all SS bumper brands have a slightly different shine/colour than chrome. But on this point no one but a CW would see it.
I'm hoping they can correct the issues because they look awesome on my car... not to mention I'm around $5K out of pocket on this project.
