Full Version: Deep Muffler Tone

I understand this years Boxters now have four cylinder engines. Was a six and now a four. The concern was that customers might feel short-changed, so Porsche spent some time developing a muffler with a macho deep tone, so it sounds great. Like a Ducati instead of a Honda. So my question is whether any aftermarket muffler manufacturers have picked up on that idea, to make an equivalent design to fit my 914 four cylinder, to make it sound good (not necessarily loud, in fact, quieter the better) instead of the characteristic VW put-put sound.

Triad gave my car a great low-tone rumble when I had the /4 in it smile.gif

Funny you should use Honda as an example of bad sound..
Generally Honda factory exhausts are extremely quiet
and the systems well made.
Unlike some other POS factory systems that make
LOUD lump-lump noises and sound like crap.
And are obviously made of tin foil since the manufacturers of the bikes
push you to buy aftermarket pipes because the ones on the bikes are junk.

Guess it is a personal preference.......

The other trick Porsche is doing (IIRC) is using unequal length headers. Its part of what gave the Subaru WRX the distinctive sound that the new 4cyl turbo Porsches have (and that Subaru WRX's no longer have, since they have moved to twin scroll turbos and equal length headers to make use of them.)

You are sacrificing some power for the good boxer grumble sound.
