I am wondering,

what the different window cranks, dome lights and steering wheels were between the years.

I know there were a couple of different cranks.

someone have a picture of the correct dome light?

and are the steering wheel horn buttons all the same throught the years?

McMark
Window cranks went from chrome to all black in 73, horn buttons were all the same, dome lights were all the same, but OE is $ and the very very similar replacement is cheaper.

is it the standard dome light one like in my beetle?

or is it "special" wub.gif

pics?

I forget where the replacement dome light comes from, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was from a beetle. Check Pelican's site for a picture.

I believe it's VERY similar to the one in a Beetle, but it has a chrome perimeter ring applied inside the plastic lens. Shape MAY be slightly different, too. The Cap'n

they have the same VW p/n... IIRC smile.gif and all that I've seen have a VW stamp on them... I think CB sells them for $3, PP -$12... that damn monkey again!

The lites are similar but the bug one doesn't fit for crap in the backpad. The new 914 ones don't have the chrome ring now. dry.gif

the new VW ones I've seen were one piece of injection molded translucent white flexy plastic- looked really shitty-cheap. I gotta OEM bus one (I think) that is nice clear hard plastic. My original 73 light didn't have chrome trim.... I noticed in my box-o-parts several old window winders and fwiw, some were made of thick guage wire and some were cast pot metal. I have no idea which (if any) are original.

I have seen three types of steering wheels on Ebey as well.

Rubber covered "leather look".

Leather wrapped.

and hard plastic.

all of these options then?

Personally i've never seen a rubber covered one.
I kind of like the leather, only i'm not so keen on the 15" dia.
I really like the early 60's 911 wheel and had thought about one of those.

thanks for the replys! smilie_pokal.gif

The 911 did not exist in the early 60's, so I'll guess you mean the late 60's - ealy 70's. In that case the 911 wheel is the basically the same as 914 - but a different (small round) horn button was used in the early years. You could adapt one of those to your stock wheel - see Scott Schroeder's car.

The 911 wheel is actually larger diameter than 914 - it was an upgrade in the early years to fit a 914 wheel to your 911 for the smaller diameter.

Here is a picture of the only interior light the factory used in the 914. There are however at least 7 other versions of this light. The factory light has the "HELLA" and "VW" logos on the face and it also says "Made In Germany" on the face.
