After a rather cool damp winter further progress is now being made on painting the Bumblebee. I have given a lot of time trying to decide if I was going to tint the Sunflower yellow to match negative stripe from 914 rubber or use the Sunflower Yellow (L13K) as it is and not concern myself with a small difference between the paint and the negative stripe. I have decided to use the Sunflower yellow and live with any difference. Alex the painter called Friday and said that he had received the paint from his supplier and on first inspection it seemed quite different from the stripe. A big concern of mine is that we don't have anything sunflower yellow to match to except the stripe.Click to view attachment

This is the can of paint as it arrived from the supplier. It is Axalta single stage paint. Under fluorescent light it seemed that difference was greater that under natural light.

1st make sure the paint is stirred thoroughly, some pigments may settle. and 2nd the color may look slightly different when dry.

When I did a touch-up with my single stage it looked a bit lighter and I thought it didn't match even though it was paint from the same can. but when it dried there was no difference.

The real trick is NOT pointing out the difference, if there is one. most people won't notice a difference.

Once you know, you can't unknow ...

paint looks a bit dull for sunflower yellow, the codes are so old these days and have been reinvented for base coat clear coat, that one never knows. We use a combination of paint code, Glasurit paint and a scanner to zero in on it, we are also blessed by having original paint panels here

We matched our vinyl from a spare tire on an original bumblebee. It matched matched perfectly.

Back in the day, I matched the yellow paint to the vinyl stripe.

You can get it pretty close, but after years, they will fade at different rates.

Do your best, enjoy your car, and after a couple fingers of bourbon... the colors will look like a perfect match.

Problem is that the paint color varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. MY shop did several spray outs from different suppliers before we got the correct color.
