Saw an add in craigslist for a whole mess of 914s, wondered what the back story is, maybe someone on this board?

Yes he had a big auction and guys came and bought some stuff that he had cherry picked and cleaned up. Sold big lots of parts. I know Bruce bought some. Only the LE sold as far as I know. and the engine was split up from it as well as the alrdam.
