Full Version: Took the real six to the inspection station last night.

I took Elwood, the real six, to the inspection station last night. The carbs are still fouled up, and I only have first through third gears.

The carb problems I can handle. After the event on Saturday, I am going to take them off the car and rebuild them. They sat for 7 years, so it is a wonder that they work at all.

I realized that I have never attempted to adjust a tail shifter linkage before. Does anyone have the adjustment procedure???? And no, converting to a side shifter is not an option. This car is going to remain bone stock in all ways.

The adjustment is via the rear access panel on the tunnel. Unless there's wear in the mechanism there's really no adjustment from the firewall back.

Only adjustment is the sleeve under the access panel. As you know there is no adjustment at the firewall connection and none at the tail of the tranny.

I know where to adjust it. The question was how to adjust it.

Does anyone have an adjustment procedure that will get it right? Kinda like the one for the side shifter by Chris Foley?

Since you know front and back work, just rotate the rod a degree at a time until you get 4th and 5th. Before you do, I would pull the shifter out and make sure the cylindrical bushing at the end of the ball is in one piece.

I had the shifter out so I could install Tangerine racing fuel lines. So I know it is good. I put in a new one.

The -6 doesn’t have splines on the end of the shift rod in the passenger compartment. It makes it difficult to move it a degree or two at a time. But I supppse if you mark the front rod and the intermediate rod with a grease pencil you’d be good.

Clay, maybe the shop manual has something in it? The procedure should be the same as an early tail shifter adjustment. I think the front rod is the same for early -4 and -6’s. The intermediate rod is different but I think they both connect in the passenger compartment the same way. Gotta be a shop manual procedure.

I figured it out on my first 914 when I was 16. I’m sure Clay will get it.

The only tail shifter I had I found the ball at the tail of the trans was worn flat....csob that I am, I built up weld metal & then filed it back to round...

Clay, you posted a terrific link for SS fuel lines. I am in the process on my 914 1.8 from the plastic lines. The car sat for 30 yrs. I cannot locate SS, 7/16 lines. Can I use brake lines? Any other help or suggestiong?
