Back when I was into making carbon fiber stuff, I hosted a "Composite Party" at my place.

20 + folks showed up and everyone made a simple carbon fiber part. It was a great time and I was thinking it'd be fun to do something like this with the 914 World folks.

So, how about a get together at my place in Petaluma where we could talk about fabrication and welding and attendees could make things?

- Maybe you'd like to learn about and bend up your own roll bar? (Andrew )
- Or do you need some sheet metal cut on the plasma table and bent up on the mag brake and want to give a go to doing it yourself?
- Are you trying to fabricate a part for rust repair and could use a tool I may have?
- You're bored - and watching others do stuff like this is better than sitting at home?

I'm sure I could persuade Martin to attend and he can demo un-f-ing-believable TIG welding and other fabrication techniques.

If nothing else, it'd be fun to meet up in person and "talk teeners"!

Anyway, let me know if you're interested, what you'd like to make or learn a bit more about and let's see what we can put together.

DOM tube can be ordered from Tube Service in Milpitas, CA and they will deliver for $20.

I'm in! Have a 1/4 floor replacement and hell hole repair staring me in the face. New to sheet metal replacement and would love to learn some skills..

why can't we do this on the EAST coast?

I think it is a great idea, I love fabrication and welding.
There was a time that I did OK with a Mig and even a few of my Tig welds were acceptable.

Also Petaluma has one of my favorite breweries.

Now I just have to hope the date is workable.

I’m in. I just bought a big ol’ Miller TIG welder and would love some pointers. Also, my first “real job” out of college was managing Petaluma Transit. So it’d be fun hading back to to Petyerllama. I’m happy to contribute some funds to help get this going, too. What dates are you considering?

Yes, I have some tools... , including a bender suitable for your roll bar - assuming you use 1.5" OD tube.

I'll edit the initial post with a list of tools that are available.

Geoff - Not set on dates. I figure we give folks plenty of runway as some may need to source material so maybe end of May or so?
I'm pretty flexible so let's see what works for most people and go from there.

Hmmm. Narrow chance at this point, but I'm trying to figure out if I can get to Petaluma over Memorial weekend to celebrate a friend's birthday. I already have a schedule conflict making it difficult, but I'll be watching this thread to see what might shake out.

Santa Rosa is closest at ~20 miles, then Oakland at about an hour away, depending on time/traffic.

That might be fun for the attendees to see. But more details, please. Do you just need to borrow a welder and you're going to do the install?

Assuming it's not raining, I can roll my build out of the shop to make room. Note that I don't have a lift so it's jack stands only.

Bring it Saturday , I wouldn't trust my welds however Chris and Mike Bellis ought to be able to whip it out.

You bet! Plus, my heads are over at Engine Masters in Sonoma for a rebuild. Wonder if I could get them back in carry-on...

The abm has a bolt on which kind of irks me. If I pull the motor anytime soon I may want to weld in a better set up.

Oh, and I don’t weld. If I tried, I’d walk out with 7 fingers, blind, and your neighbors cat would be on fire.

I'd be up for this. I've got just the project in mind. Flat stock, bandsaw and Roll bender are all I'd need. Keeping an eye out for the date.

Who do you have to know?

I would love to do this in the midwest.. Would have to check my contract as it may be against it and don't want to risk that.

I'd love to take a road trip with a buddy to meet you, Chris. Hoping it happens.

I could flat tow mine if that helps. Interior is out as well as drive train. I assume its ok to flat tow that way.

Chris, you must have ESP, I was just thinking about recommending you do something like this for us knuckleheads that are thirsting for some of the knowledge that you possess. I'd be happy to just watch, listen and learn!
I am definitely in if I'm on the left coast. Should be there late April early May.

How far are you from the Petaluma airport?

I may b up for volunteering, as long as we make one for me too! the hardest part will be removing my seat which has found its self quite stuck

It's about 5 miles. I would like to go too. I could pick you up in my 914 and drop you off.

I'd like to fool around on your english wheel if you don't mind parts being fabricated for an italian car (targa roof panel for a Lancia Scorpion)...

OK, it's looking like we can do this on Saturday, June 2.

The good news is there's lots of interest. The less than good news is that my shop isn't unlimited in size. So, logistics will be the most "interesting" part of this party.

In order to make this work as well as possible, we need to account for who's doing what. Note that it may be impossible to accommodate everyone in one day. We can carry over to Sunday or set up follow up sessions, as needed.

I'll take what I can from the existing replies and put it in the initial post to work up a sort of schedule.

Looking over the current list of who wants to do what, I think we're in good shape and can accommodate all these efforts happening at the same time, crowded tho, my little shop may be with all this going on!

Well, this is painful. By coincidence, it looks like I'm going to be right there in Petaluma that weekend for my first ever visit to the Bay area. But with a full agenda for the weekend that will prevent my attending this epic event. !

I can bring my welder and tools and go over general metal shaping, metal forming, rust repair, painting tips, mig welding and grinding/finishing.

Hmmm, good thing I said "Target Date". I'm not married to that weekend and I totally spaced on the Historics and would like to attend, at least one of the days.

Plus, if we move the date, maybe we can talk Brent into traveling to CA twice in one year!

PartsHeaven can be done from 7AM to 9AM unless you want to stick around and bask in the glow of CWs.

I can skip parts Heaven and do the Historics Sundy, but other people may need their junk/CW fix.
