VIN number relates to model year.
Date of manufacture does not.

Your car is a '76

If you notice, car model years typically come out in the late summer early fall of the preceding year.

For example, cars built from 8/75 through 5/76 would be 1976 models.

It's still that way even today.

If you want to start selling your brand new 2019 model in 2019, you better start building them in 2018 ...

The final countdown . . .

Chassis number code: The 914/4 sequence is xxy9zzz, where xx is the week number of the year (01-52), y is the day of the week (1-5) and zzz is the daily sequence number. The daily number from MY 1970 to 1974 began as 501. It then changed to 001.

My '76 is chassis number 5029038. This translates to have been the 38th body on Tuesday, December 16, 1975, during the final week of production for the model. VIN: 4762903947. There were 153 914s assembled after mine.

From our VIN data, there was a MY 1976 car with chassis number 5049021. This would have been the 21st body on Thursday, December 18, 1975. VIN 4762904081. Only 19 additional 914s were assembled after #4081.

Also from our VIN data, there is a car with the VIN 4762904099, but no chassis number is listed. This would have been the next to last 914 assembled. The member who made the entry has not been active since 2011.

From the Members VIN section, your car's chassis number, 4619001 says that it was the 1st body assigned on Monday, November 24, 1975.

Most new cars are built and sold up to 5 months prior to the model year.. my wife's two cars were sold in Sept and Oct as the following year model.

Even in the 50's, new cars were released in Sept prior to the model year

ALL `76 914s were built in 1975 - NONE were built in 1976.

For ANY car anywhere in the world since the 1930-40's - the MY runs from the Aug/Sept of the MY minus 1, through June/July of the MY. That's why you could buy a 2018 MY Porsche or other makes starting last September. If they start building & selling a MY before that Aug/Sept of the MY-1 date, then it's considered an early release.

Ergo 76 MY ran from Aug/Sept 1975 to June/July 1976, but the 914 line closed on or about 12/31/75, then started tooling up for the 924s.

Porsche filled in the 76 MY with later production of the 912E with the 914's 2L motor for the 1st 6 months of 1976. IIRC some of those may have been built in late 1975.

The US-DOT required VIN stickers & plates relate to the actual date of production - NOT to the MY of any car.

As everyone else pointed out the production started the year prior to the model year.
1975/1976 were busy years of change, the 912E was started in May 1975 and continued thru July 1976. The 924 was a new model for 1976, about 5000 were produced. The 914 was phased out in this time period.
