Updated 5/2/18 after talking with 914 ZR-1. Things are a go and looking great! Read below, some stuff has changed.

When:
The current plan is to do Sat May 26, 9 am to probably 10-12.

Location:
May 26 at Santa Clarita, near Magic Mountain. I am limiting class size to 13-15 participants. We will have a 3 car garage bay (plenty, trust me), can work on food, take out, what ever.


Cost to participate:
$300/builder. Builders 18 and under are free. Only one transmission per builder. Spectators are free, and yes you can take notes, pics, and ask questions. Cost includes new stainless hardware for your build, rags, acetone or break cleaner for cleaning, gloves (I'll need sizes to get right qty), cleaning trays.

Parts:
To help cover the cost of the time off from my day job, travel, lodging, etc, I encourage you to buy parts from me whenever possible. I will have a stock of good used parts on hand, will show you how to determine when a part is not serviceable, and will show you have to save some $$ on a rebuild since you are doing the work yourself. I have moved away from using used bearings as I have lost confidence in them over the last few years. More are failing, and I never want one that I recommend to end up like that. As such, I have managed to secure all of the main input shaft and pinion bearings (4 total) for a deep discount (Retail currently about $1100). I will need orders and payment as promptly as possible to secure a set in the order I will have to make for this event. Contact me to get that ball rolling. I do not expect to have bearings available at the event other than those pre purchased. Also, discount only applies to students of the clinic, and for those whom I do rebuilds for (aka, I don't retail to the public). I will also have access to 1/R sliders (for you 5 speed boxes) for $300 (retail about $500).

Tools:
All special tools will be provided at the clinic. You will need nothing special: 19mm socket, 13mm socket, small hammer, small sledge. Tools to have if you have them handy would be some drifts/punches, deep 30mm socket, breaker bar, 32mm boxed end wrench, MAP or propane torch, seal drivers, wire brushes, cordless impact drivers, work bench/table (cheap plastic folding ones from Walmart and similar work just fine and accommodate up to 3 builders, but we have many 914 folks bringing tables as well), rags, break cleaner and or acetone. If you are willing to share your tools, that would be great and save me shipping heavy metal items that are rather common in most of our tool collections.


Prep:
Clean your case the best you can. You will be happier for it, our host will as well. Do not pressure wash it. You will get water in, it will cause rust. Bet me. Don't sand blast it...worse than water. DO NOT take it completely apart as you will lose the setting for the ring and pinion and that will mean I will need to reset that stuff and that is not happening at the clinic. Setting r/p takes expensive tools, and lots of time and parts that are not conducive to a clinic setting. This is something I do at my home shop on customer rebuilds. DO, please, take off the side cover and inspect your ring and pinion. If these are roached, you will not be able to build this transmission at the clinic because changing the r/p requires the aforementioned special tools and time. If you are unsure of your pinion, take a pic and post it up for evaluation and so we can all learn something. Other than popping off the side cover and inspecting the r/p, and cleaning some of the schmutz off of the case, please be sure to drain it. Although, when you check the r/p you will drain it one way or another. Not expecting disposal facilities for oils on site.

OK, I think that is everything, but if I get more questions I will update this post to answer it for everyone. I will also start an attendance roster in this post to keep things up to date.

Already updated: Prep, and added some things you may want to bring, and what I plan to supply.

I don't need a rebuild but I can contribute. I have 6-8 folding plastic tables, some dedicated trans tools including the synchro tool, a "cut case" for viewing the gear stacks and alignment, some good used syncs, dog teeth and stock gear sets. Hit me up if you need any of these items for your OC class.

NICE! Love this place. The sense of community is what keeps us all here year after year (been almost 15 for me).

Ill get a count on tables later on and see what we need and who is easiest.

Kent, the pullers for the dog teeth are about all we would need. The alignment jig is easier and lighter to use and easy to mail so no need for a cut away case. Fun if you want to bring so folks can see how stuff works, though.

Best for a steel plate that can rest on the ground. A table will have too much give At Seattle clinic I bought a 12x12x1/4" plate for this. Never have seen it since. Never shipped back.

I took the side cover off my transmission tonight to include photos. I don't know what to look for when examining. Input is appreciated.

The last picture looks bad. Did you find the chunks in there?

BTW- sign up for this clinic and rebuild your transmission, or any transmission.

Having the Dr (a real Dr BTW) intelligently helping you rebuild and restore your own transmission, especially for conversion or racing spec, is an unbelievable deal, let alone a great experience.

Going and watching is like porn, it's interesting at first, but its a whole lot more fun actually doing it.

I rebuilt Dad's car's side shift... I didn't think I needed it but cracked it open anyway. It turned out I had a cracked main bearing that worked just fine after 88K miles, but was a ticking time bomb. Never raced - stock.

Look again, that’s 2 smaller gears at different angles... I thought I saw broken gears until I looked closer...

Bummer I can’t make that weekend, but I wish the best to everyone that makes it! Invaluable service to the he community, thanks Dr. E, and those to help bring it to CA!

Hard to tell exactly in this pic, but it is a great start. The yellow arrow show the faces of the pinion that need to be wiped clean and inspected. You are looking for any pock marks, galling, spalling (some fancy terms) where there is metal missing. Wear marks are not a big deal, missing metal is definitely a big deal. Many that have been an issue in the past were blatant (big metal pieces missing from face of pinion).

Orang arrow is your "spider gears" and that wear is normal. No chunks missing. The yellow arrows indicate the faces that need to be inspected. Similar to pinion, we are mainly looking for missing material.

Update:

Ill add this in the first post as well, but SMC is hooking it up!

They are looking into providing the acetone and rags for us, as well as donuts and coffee in the mornings. Aaron is working with SMC to see if they can have discounted parts available for everything outside the gearbox (since I will have all the internal parts covered), like clutch, CV, bushings, TOB, etc. I gave them a list. There is a restaurant next door that can cater, est is $10-13 a head at this time. Also, local Eagle Rock Brewery may be bringing beer. We will see what cost coverage on that is. And, SMC is looking into goody bags. There is also talk about around 20 parking spots in their lot held for AC Porsche only parking for a small show. Sounds like this will be quite the spectacle!

I just posted this over to the 912 forum, too. Not sure about sharing on Pelican due to using SMC facilities and advocating buying parts from them when possible. Feel free to spread the news far and wide. I really need to get to the 20 to make this not a loss.

On the fence myself on this, i take it no plans for a Nor-Cal clinic in the next few months?

I am open to it, if this one reaches capacity. If not, gonna be a loooong while as I will need to recover from the endeavor. I want to see the bay area again. Its been too long. The proposed clinics in the near future ( provided I can get time and child care) are Canada, Seattle, Nor Cal. I am open to others. If I strike out on my own to start a family practice clinic (working on it), I can make my own hours, but need the side income to cover the start up and low revenue over the first year or two. Using my mechanical skills to get the medical side up and running

I can post on Pelican, so long as we keep it community focused rather than a vendor pitch I think that is OK.

The Samba might be a good spot too. I can reach out to some of the PCA sights as well.

I would love to do this, but am already down the NEXT weekend for my nephew's graduation. Since my transmission on my car is solid, I am probably going to hold out and pray that you make it up to No. Cal for a clinic. I guess I can be patient, but it's NOT one of my strong suits! LOL

I will have sets for every participant, no worries. I have enough in stock to cover the 7 listed currently.

Pulled the sidecover from my core box today. All dif gearing that I can see shows no signs of pitting, scrapes, gouges or uneven wear to my untrained eye. There was a lot of very fine junk on the drain plug magnet. I will try to get my other box out of storage this weekend to compare. I bought this core because the blue paint made me hope it had been rebuilt before and possibly have some new or upgraded parts

Tool questions:

1. For 19 and 13mm sockets, is 3/8" drive okay? Do we need bigger?

2. Is there a certain size/type of seal driver we need? These can be really pricey or really cheap? Which one(s) do we need?

3. Does the 32mm wrench need to be enclosed or open or does it matter? A box wrench (closed) is specified, but could we use an open-ended one?

4. How deep on the 30mm deep socket?

I rebuilt my transmission with the good Dr. at the clinic in VA back in December. Really fun experience and the box shifts so much better now. Highy highly recommended.

19 and 13 can be simple 3/8 drive. The rest is not necessary unless you already have them. I supply that stuff.
