Looking towards front, laying on my back. There seems to be a large gap between the underside of the alternator, is there another piece to seal this up that goes directly under the alternator?

Actually I'd describe it as on the 'front' of the alternator.
And there's a plastic ring that goes in there too.

I bought a plastic ring from Fosterjoejr. I think he had a couple of them when I bought it.
Is that a tin under the thermostat??? Sorry for the HIJACK... but I've never seen that before. 
You can't see the thermostat in any of those pictures.
