Im switching to a /6

So the big 4 is available, 2366 with webbers an about 5k miles on it

Total package for 8k $

But must do local pickup in sgv

$8k for a VW engine? Looks like price gouging to me.

I did a lot of research on this and you can find the conclusions here.

Most of these are long blocks but it certainly gives you an idea of possible starting points to move forward in cost to a plug an play.

With that said, first pick your fuel delivery preference. Fuel injection or carbs. Both will work and have their pros and cons. But if you want performance a modern FI engine management system gives you a lot of control that you don't get with carbs.

Stick with reasonable P/C size increases. Going to a 105mm P/C gets you displacement but unless you are going to have LN nickies there will always be a heat concern.

A 2.3 with the right parts can make a very good running engine. Unless the engine you get is built by someone with talent like Raby, it is difficult for most builders to push it beyond the 2.3 with out issues.

So even at the 2056 level a build with a good cam and big alve heads can make a really fun package for a reasonable price. At 2.3 it starts top get expensive but very fun.

Without details it is hard to tell if the $8k is a good deal. But you can certainly do it for less.

Not the intent at all. There are a lot of talented engine builders that have that level of skill. Was not implying he was the only one that could do it but rather you need to go to one of those builders with that type of skill.

With any engine the first concern I would have is who build the engine and exactly what did they put into it alone with their skill and knowledge level. Many ways to make mistakes or cut corners and end up with a pile of scrap.
As an example I bought a 1.7 engine rebuilt by an aircraft mechanic. Grease and dirt on the heads made me suspicious. Compression was 100 PSI on all cylinders. CR was 6.5 to 1.
Heads needed $500 in work to make them right. Hope everything in the bottom end was done right.

I think that calling in a VW engine is what is misleading people. Even they can get silly expensive.
I remember going to FAT Performance ( before they were sold to Rimco ) and seeing build tickets on Type IV engines in the $10K to $14K range.

Yep, I have a 2733 built by Fat Performance and the build sheet in 1982 was 10k for a complete turnkey engine with 48 Webers.

I have a 2056 built by FAT last year that still hasn't gone in my car with a trans from Rancho. The motor dyno'd at 142 hp. New Weber carbs and ignition. Basically went through the catalog and did everything they offer to make it reliable. Found rust in the body I have and have kind of lost interest. I think I have $11,500 in the engine and another $2500 in the trans. If you are interested, let me know and we can talk price.

Engine is still in the car and being driven every sunday
And religiously maintained, i have all recipes for oil changes and valve adjustments

Which is all the info i saw before i bought it about 15 months ago .
I got it from a known and reputable world member here
So i was not really concerned with dynos and blueprints

But i did contact european motorworks to get some back round on it and they confirmed the details and expense of the build .



Any other ? I will be happy to answer if i know
