So just after praising the customer service of getting this boot to my house in 2 days of placing the order I run into the part not even being in the same ball park of fitment. Anyone else having this issue? There isn't even a place for the wire to sit like in the stock one.

Update: I have an early boot setup. Must have been before the switch in 73.

Looks like you have a VW bus alternator that uses a larger boot. Can you measure and post a picture of your alternator backing plate?

I don't think connecting to the alt is the issue. It doesn't fit in the fan hole nor have an extra rubber ring to hold the wire.

Early is larger than the late on those. I found that out on my car too. My 72 also had a spring retainer that the superseded part did not have. I believe that this is one of the parts that Porsche was trying to save money on when the emissions and safety expenditures were cutting into their bottom line.

Yes. We will probably make the early version and spring clip at some point but have lots of other projects in front of it currently.

You can return it for a refund and I will see if I can find a decent used one but I don't think I can get the retaining spring

No it is not just your boot. I sent mine back to Scott this week. He said he was going to get with Mark. Return it.

Dumb question perhaps but will the altenator overheat without this and the backing duct cover?,wonder what folks do with the aftermarket upgrade ones which these parts don't fit ?,I would be interested to know.

We make a stock like cover. I would recommend running one. Will the car run without it, yes. Will it overheat, probably not, but when you cool a car with air (think about it like a liquid), would you want a leak?

As far as the early boot. If I can get a good example, I can make them. Right not my only good one is in my car.

I am not sure what I have Mark, but it’s new and you can have it if you need it for reverse engineering.

You are correct. Early and late. I have never pulled a large one from a 914. Mostly have had late engines.

Looks like both b and d are late. No letter is early

To the best of my knowledge is only one version for the 914. The VW bus had 2 versions. Early version is the same as the 914 one with D shape vent. The 75 amp version has a ROUND hole.

Ive seen both versions. Unfortunately after I made the late.
The early has an extra relief for a large spring clip.
