A friend contacted me today about a set of heat exchangers off of a 75 or 76 914.. I went and looked at them and they are pretty nice. Any idea on value if any? I know bad performance but for the orginal folks.

I haven't seen any that are worth reusing. Now that original brings good money, I'm guessing a couple hundred if all the parts are there. Might take a while to find a buyer.

The only two cars I have owned have been a '76 2.0 and a '75 1.8. The heat exchangers on both have been pretty shot, so I tossed them. But that was before where we are right now.

I would say put them on ebay and see what you get.

At this point, I am not throwing away any Porsche parts.

My 75 came with what looks like the factory exchanger tubes on them. Someone cut off the outer sheet metal. The tubes that are left are stainless (non magnetic) to my surprise. Don't know if they were all that way but may still have some decent life left in them if so.

Are you all talking about these? I have a set in much better condition and i was thinking of using them as a starting point for a homemade dual exhaust. I would only be using them with an extension where the reactor went leading into mufflers exiting the rear.

My 76 came with custom exhausts which I'd like to get rid of, hate to throw them away but too far from Hershey to display.

I had a perfect complete 75 exhaust that even had the heat shielding still intact on the head stub pipes.


I gave them away just to get them out of my garage!

In the past, the 75-76 exhaust hasn't been worth much. It's distinctly sub-optimal, worse than any of the earlier exhausts, and only desired by people who had to pass smog with original-type parts.

Now that 914s have started to get collectible, you might see some more demand for the original-type parts, but I'm a fan of backdating these any time it is practical.

BTW, the F-pipes make a lousy basis for a custom exhaust. Unless you're just looking for noise. The unequal lengths plus combining two cylinders that fire right after each other, plus the tight-180-bend thing, make for rather worse performance than the early exhaust. Note that the main difference between the 74 2.0 that made 95 HP and the 75 2.0 that made 88 is this very exhaust....

They are also a heavy mass of steel connected to the heads to heat unburned fuel for emissions, which retained high heat at the heads, leading to heads with a shorter service life from the high heat.

No, not $0 value, about $.07 per pound for scrap steel. Time to recycle them.

Deduct time and gas to and from the scrap recycler @.07 per pound. Hardy cutting a fat hog. Trying to SELL a set of stripped 75-76 with scabbed on mufflers? You have to cut them apart to avoid a massive oversized shipping bill. Then the scrap is real money.
