Full Version: Recommendations on a clutch kit

Good morning, hope everybody's having a good week so far.

Are there any recommendations on a specific vendor for a 2 L with stock gearbox? This is a streetcar for normal (not racing) use.

I know this might be blasphemy, but I got my Sachs kit from Rock Auto a few years back for around $250. Shopped around quite a bit and that was the best price.

Oops - clutch kits are all the same regardless of whether it's a 1.7, 1.8L or 2 L?


Read "turbo" car and I actually don't know exactly what is in it since it's been modified.

19 piece with instructions, usually the flywheel is scored so will need replacement as well if the clutch is slipping.

My clutch has been slipping badly (It came to me like that).

Are the kits the same regardless of engine displacement?

While that may be true it looks like it has as much or more pieces than the Autohz kit has.

so still seems like a better deal. you just need to order ALL the needed parts no matter who the supplier is. biggrin.gif

Yes but if I bought the same kit from you I would have $115 less to spend on the other parts. I like that you are here and trying and I love the pictures of your cars, but sometimes your comments are a little self serving, no?

good advice, as we have done so many clutch jobs that we know what you need. Notice I did not quote anything about having it, buying it or a link, just advice.

Well he did ask for a "clutch kit" recommendation. Of course if the OP wants to do it completely and properly he would need a flywheel seal, flywheel bolts, pilot bushing, take the flywheel to the machine shop (maybe buy a new one if the old one is shot), rear main seal (maybe the tranny seal too since it's out), clutch release arm bushing, etc. I had money left over to get all those parts too. smoke.gif

Are the clutch kits the same part all the various displacement engines?

I think so but want to double check.

yes just a simple thing like cv joint gaskets and muffler gaskets!

Yes, the clutch is the same on all 914s, and 911s up through 1969.

Parts you need:
Clutch disk
Pressure plate
Throw-out bearing
Throw-out bearing plastic bushings
Throw-out arm pivot bushing
Pilot bearing
Pilot bearing felt
Flywheel lock plate
Rear main seal (I put them in every time I do a clutch. It's cheap insurance).
2 CV joint gaskets
Muffler gaskets (2.0 is different from 1.7/1.8)

Optional
New shift rod bushings (tail shift and side shift use different bushings)
Trans front seal.
