Hi,
I am getting closer to installing the engine and trans. in my 73. Before I assemle everything I want to do as much as I can while everything is apart. I cleaned up the tranny today and am installing a new TO bearing and was wondering about replacing the tranny seals. There is a drive shaft oil seal and a "final drive flange shaft seal". (The small one behind the TO bearing and two larger ones inside where the inner cvjoints bolt on.) Should I change these seals out now that everything is out of the car or should I leave it. None of them are leaking that I can see but that doesn't mean they won't soon. So, to change or not to change. Dat be da question. What do you all think? If I wasn't such a lazy ass I'd just go ahead and do it but I thought I'd get some opinions.
So, change em agree.gif or forget it pissoff.gif ?
Cheers, Elliot

Change 'em as its pretty easy to do. Good insurance

I would change them (although I only remember one seal for the
input shaft). When I bought my car, that seal had been leaking,
and it was difficult to tell how much due to other oil. But the
clutch disc was toasted by tranny fluid, and I drove the car to
its new home 800 miles with only 1/2 quart of fluid in it sad.gif
Apparently that's how low it has to get before the leak stops tongue.gif

Yes, there is one small seal on the output shaft and the output flanges have a larger seal. Just take off the flanges to remove and install new seals.

Thanks guys,
They will be replaced. I ordered them today and should hope to get them soon. Lots of little things to do before I get this thing running again.

I'd get the entire kit, and replace the everything but the gaskets.

However, if it were me, and I had the tranny sitting right there, I'd open it up and change the 1st and 2nd gear synchro's....

Replace all three.. and consider the speedo drive O-ring, while you're in there. It's only a few more pennies.

I always replace the seal for the shift console on the side shift tranny's. It sees a lot of work and is normally dripping into the plastic "boot".
