Full Version: Best distributor with 40IDF carbs. References not clear?

Building a new 2056 with dual 40IDF weber clone carbs, New AA 2l heads, WebCam 086 cam,

There are numerous threads about "009, 050, 205" etc, etc, which seems to refer to known shorthands as to how to refer to the various distributors.

Some seem to reference part of the Bosch number , others part of the VW number and it is very confusing for those of us not as knowledgeable as many of you.

So here are the distributors I have in my stash and am seeking advise as to the best one for daily driving with my new build.

1. Bosch 0231181009 VW 022905205AA Which is suppose to be from 74 914 1.8L
2. B - 0231176048 VW 021905205A-B 75 914 1.8 for California?
3. B - 0231137009 VW 113905205K From 66-67 Type 1
4. B - 0231167070 VW 113905205AN From 72-73 Type 1 (have 2 of these)
5. B - 0231129019 VW??? From 49-53 Type 1 and 55-59 type 2. I think this one was used Formula Vee racers as is pure mechanical advance only, no vacuum.

Numbers 1 and two both have vacuum advance with two ports, one for advance and one for retard. Numbers 3 and 4 only have one vacuum for advance only.

After searching and searching it seems that number 1 or 2 are preferred in my case. but am not sure as whether to

1 Use the vacuum advance or not for drive ability, is it needed.
if so believe only the advance is used?
2. Do my new carbs have the right vacuum advance port. Reference photo
Both carbs have this plug pointed to by arrow. Is this the advance port? If not where is it or do I have to drill a port Where?

3. If none of my stash are usable then what dizzy is, and please provide the full Bosch or VW part number if possible.

Note the carb port pointed to seems to be above the throttle plate. Just below it on both sides is another threaded plug that is below the throttle plate, but there is no tube protruding to attach a hose.

#1 mallory unilite
#2 mallory red cap, any, you can use points with MSD or pertonix or unilite module.

#3, 123 programmable dizzy, no experience but I believe good reviews.

#4, Bosch L-jet dizzy works OK, 914 or from a FI bus, I believe same dizzy

except for the 123 dizzy, all of the above you would need to source used, aircooled.net has parts for the Mallory's.
009 and 050 IMHO are not good choices.

I would only do mechanical advance, especially with hotter than stock cams.

I have a 2056 with Dellorto 40's and I ran a 050 for a while and also tried a stock FI distributor. I switched to a Mallory dual point that I later converted to a Pertonix. It made a really big difference in performance and drive-ability. The Mallory advance mechanism is easy to adjust and the cap is bigger which makes for a more stable spark. The bearings in the Mallory are also bigger and aren't as prone to wear out. I also tried a MSD box for a while but eliminated it for simplicity.

#1. Yes, you need ported vacuum for street drivability , use any of the 1.8 FI distributors
#2 The brass slotted plug below the throttle plate is the ported vacuum port. You'll have to thread a small (x3mm) tube for the vacuum hose. By the way, use the smaller port on the distributor.

I was using the Mallory unilite with vac adv on #4 only and an anti pulse valve. I switched to a 123 bluetooth and had the same results if not better. I was even able to run vac advance if I wanted to get the most fuel economy. My build specs were very similar to yours. I vote 123 all the way for ease of use. Also a great lockout theft deterrent. Thanks very much, should one put a small 3mm tube in each of the 4 openings and build a manifold for to allow 4 tubes into one to equalize and stabilize the vacuum??

Are the 3mm tubes available or must one make them?

And yes I do understand the smaller port on the vacuum unit is for advance and leave the larger retard tube open.

What do you set your timing too? Total advance at what RPM.

You only need vac on cyl #4 and should use an anti pulse valve.

Timing is based on your distro choice as you want to achieve 28 degrees full advance. When I used the Mallory it was a full advance of 28 degrees with gray/gray springs. The Mallory advanced 16 degrees total which set my idle at 12 degrees. The 123 is fully programmable so you can set the idle to what you want as well as the curve and total advance.

050 SVDAs are good curve and not too expensive & good single vac advance units - you can find new ones with pertronix on ebay relatively cheap

THROW AWAY the 009's !!!!!!!!!
they only have 1/2 the advance - must be a 'b-zillion threads on that problem

Thanks for info thus far. Am still not getting clear picture. Can someone please provide the complete Bosch or VW number of the 009 distributor that is not desired. I have two of them whos Bosch numbers end in 009.

One of them is from a 1.8L which we thought was desirable.
