Buy 6 feet of gear cable (NOT brake cable) from a local bike shop for $3 instead of two feet of the same cable, OEM, for $50.

I now have a thermostat again:

Cool. Did it come with a ferrule attached? If not, what did you use?
ericoneal
Yes, the ferrule on the derailleur (gear) cables are the perfect size. Brake cables are larger and will not work.

that work great! I did the same thing a few months ago!. The guy in the bike shop didn't even know what to charge me...

I used part of a bike cable for mine years ago, but I don't recall what cable I used. I know I just cut the cable with an angle grinder and made it fit. It was thicker then stock, but it worked really well.

@ericoneal
This is cool! I’m glad I’ve found something on this topic.

The previous owner rigged this system somehow on mine, he was vague about it. I think the flaps are either always open or always closed.

Do you have any pics or guidance of
1: thermostat location
2: flap location
3: wire rigging.

I have a 1970, 1.7 FI if that helps.

Trying to undue the messy stuff on mine and get it back to stock.

Thank you!!! -Rob

The flaps are under the cooling tins on top of the engine and are attached to a bar running across the engine near the oil dipstick. The thermostat cable attaches to this bar and opens/closes the flaps.
Have a look at this site:

thermostats

Near the bottom of the page, you can see how to mount.
If you leave the thermostat off, the flaps will fail in the "open/cooling" position.
