Is this to be a total rebuild if a rods knocking?
I haven't gotten into this relm of 914's.... yet

depends on how scarred up the crank is. What does your rod knock sound like, does it get louder as you increase rpms, or does it only do it at idle.....

IMHO, if the rod is knocking, anything less than a rebuild is a "ptach"

It got louder when I increased RPM's
I can still hear Craig & Jim shouting "SHUT IT OFF... SHUT IT OFF"

Yes, it's rebuild time. If it's really a rod and you can hear it the crank's already damaged and there's no other way to fix it. You might get lucky and have caught some kind of piston or valve faliure early on, meaning you wouldn't necessarily have to split the case, but you'd still be well advised to go ahead and do it all "while you're in there".
