So I’m guessing that the 914 chassis was not built to withstand the stresses and strains of 360 hp and grip of 12” racing slicks... or heck, even 230 hp and 245 wide tires! So far, in Papa Surf, we’ve cracked (ripped off is more accurate) the outer rear suspension console, cracked the chassis around the rear wheel well/suspension area, and ripped out the front control arm mount points (all have been fixed and reinforced)
In Huey, we tore off the inner rear suspension mount point “ear”.
I don’t think that will make papa smurf go faster.

Yuck! I hope the repair is straightforward and the rust worm hasn't eaten heavily. Definitely on my car various areas have been reinforced, plus the 10-point welded cage, but I still worry about it ripping itself apart.

slowly but surely all stock sheet metal is getting replaced or reinforced.
Our winter project was to take out the engine and trans and send to Dawe's Motorsport for an engine refresh and trans rebuild/regear plus add LSD. Then while these are away, to completely disassemble the car down to bare chassis, have it media blasted, fix any holes, broken areas, rust spots etc. do more strengthening/stiffening with the cage and cross braces, re-wire, re-plumb some things that have been changed a dozen times, fix all the holes in the fiberglass body panels, re-paint, and put it all back together.
Guess the project is starting earlier than anticipated...
Just wish I had the ROOM to do all this!!

Bob,
That hurts to see. Glad you caught it before it failed in a hard corner on track. As my flight instructor used to say to me "That would ruin your whole day."
Good luck!

The only real frustrating part is that we're done for the year. we had a weekend planned in early Dec at Roebling with a bunch of friends - fun, low key DE weekend...oh well...

Wow! You do in months what takes others years. Looking forward to seeing the photos as you disassemble and then reassemble Papa Smurf.

Routine inspection We were at the track couple weekends ago. After a track weekend, I usually check out the car to see if all is ok, oils leaks, etc. With Okteenerfest last weekend I didn’t have a chance until today.

While the HP and Torque might be a contributing factor, Steve Nieslony did that in the Pylon Assassin with a sort of stock TypeIV and race tires. It’s the grip they don’t handle well...
