I need to replace my early non-retractable seatbelts but everyone I talk to wants $75 to $100 for a clean belt (not even a pair of belts, just a belt for one side). This seems a little high to me. The 914 belts look straight out of the VW parts bin. The belt with the tongue is part 1.0084.0 (if I remember correctly) and the belt with the release lever is 1.9004.1 (or something close to that).

My question is what early VW has compatable belts? And while I'm at it, any recommendations for best Bay Area wreaking yard for 914s and aircooled VWs?

Google for custom seatbelts. There are folks that will reman your existing ones, and you can get them done in any color combo you like. Why use old crap, when you can have new material?

I wouldnt use the stock 30 year belts... ever. This is for my wifes car.

bugcity.com. They (among probably a hundred others) have the
black non-retractable 3 point belts that fit well. They look 'period'
since they have the chrome lift buckle. $32.95 each. Comes with
the bolts. Same threads 914 and VW. I can get a pic of mine if you
want. I'm with Brad, after talking with a expert I would never trust
30-year-old poor design belts in a crash.

The bug belts do have some things you may not like; the bolts don't
have the shoulder and plastic bushings so the ends can't pivot. That
only matters on the b-pillar IMHO. Also there is adjustment on the
shoulder and on the stubby piece, so now you have a bunch of
excess belt hanging around.

Work great for autocross, though.

For those who are interested: inertia reel seat belts out of a Porsche 924 are largely the same with a fractionally shorter belt. There is a PP Tech Article on this issue.
