1974 standard beetle with original 1600 dp engine.
Pertronix distributor and coil, about a year old.

Drove the car to work last Tuesday.
Tried to drive the car to work last Wednesday but she wouldnt start.
Started trouble shooting last night with no luck.
Coil ohm'd out good, so figured it was the pertronix.
Swapped out the dizzy for the original dizzy with points.
Still no fire.
Swapped out the dizzy for a brand new pertronix dizzy I had on the shelf.
Still no fire.
Swapped out the dizzy for the 009 that is in my running 914.
Still no fire.
Put in a new coil that also ohm'd out fine.
Still no fire.
Checked the center spark plug wire and it ohm'd out at ~900 ohms.
Thinking its a ground somewhere, but where?
I have 12V to the + side of the coil.

So now what?

haha!!
Wife said the same thing!
I asked her if she thought I was an idiot.
Then when she turned around, I checked to make sure. smile.gif

But my issue is no spark.

Take 12v + directly from the coil to the battery then try to start it. beerchug.gif

Check the ground strap. Near the nose cone of the tranny to the body.

That worked.
Then put back to normal and she fired right up.
Drove a bit then parked her in the shed.
Tried to fire up the next morning and NO SPARK!!
Seems I get 12V to coil when key is at run, but not start.
Odd.
Replaced ignition switch about a year ago.
Looks like I will pull the switch to inspect.
Any idea what to look for?

Cracked switch housing, known issue with the aftermarket switches. IIRC the '74 bug uses the same switch as the 914.
Best to find a good used OE switch and add my ford solenoid fix in my signature below.
The ford solenoid fix takes the amp load off of the switch.

Yes I agree its a bad ignition switch. I've had the same issue on 3 cars - 12 volts at the coil with ignition on, but loose the 12 volts at the coil when cranking. Happened on my T2 camper recently.
