Full Version: 914 50th Anniversary at 2020 Werks Reunion

This is a heads-up & clarification -

I wanted to get back to the members on here about the 914's 50th Anniversary thinking that our 914's 50th was being shunned, after another member here had posted that PCA was only recognizing the 964's 30th at the Werks Reunion (actually it's at this year's event 2019 for 964 1989-2019).

I contacted PCA's CEO Vu Nguyen - who is a 72 914/4 owner himself BTW - to find out what was planned for 2020.

He clarified that this year's 2019 Werks Reunion is celebrating the 964's 30th Anniversary, & that the 2020 is definitely doing the 914's 50th 1970-2020. piratenanner.gif

https://www.pca.org/event/2018-12-04/werks-...n-monterey-2019

.

Apparently the 2020 Parade will be in Zone 8, Riverside Region, in Palm Springs! piratenanner.gif

But there is no website for it yet, but the 2019 Parade Spacebook page notes for you Social Media addicts -

2019 Parade info -

.

For those not yet members of PCA - the $46 annual dues is well worth the money for just the Panorama monthly magazine - in comparison with Excellence magazine's subscription of $48 IIRC - & PCA includes membership for 2 (2nd is Associate for spouce, kid, etc.), free PCA Juniors Program for your kids/grandkids, nieces/nephews, whatever, a bunch of free & low fee events locally & around the country if you're traveling, as well as Concours, Autocross, Rally, Race, DE, Treffen, Werks, Tours, etc., etc. events to use & enjoy your P-car(s).

A flood of new 914 owners joining will also bolster our 914 presence at all levels of PCA for the upcoming 2020 50th anniversary.

So you folks can also get around during this year, to also help getting 914 50th recognition, timelines, featured cars, displays, etc. put on within your own PCA Zones & Regions.

I'll be doing so in Zone 8's & OC Region's Concours, & our Zone 8 Concours Chair Dick Douglas is very interested in getting 914ers out to display &/or enter at the various Concours, as well as at the morning breakfasts (Dick does the GPX Region's Cone Zone in Seal Beach). So we have a willing leadership here.

Hopefully you do too, or can convince some to be willing in your respective Zones & Regions.

Let's start pushing now, for getting lotsa 914s out to PCA & other events during its 50th anniversary year next year in 2020. piratenanner.gif

fuchia914.jpg grasshopper914.jpg ravenna914.jpg red914.jpg silver914.jpg white914.jpg signal914.jpg

Speaking of which, with Dick Douglas's help, we were successful in reeducating some of the Zone 8 Concours head judges & event chairs that 914s & other P-cars with "alternative powerplants" & drivetrains ARE in fact eligible to compete in the Special Categories Division, as well as are Racer 914s & P-cars which have been tracked within the prior 12 months.

So at least in Zone 8's Central & SoCal, AZ & Southern NV Regions - 914s with V8s, Subies, EVs, & even Cessna & Rotax aircraft engines, or any other engines are welcomed - whether as a car entered for judging, or for Display only.

914s Wanted for CFOS 356 Timeline 3/30/19, & Concours Judging School 3/31/19 at CFOS

Also according to Dick Douglas - at the upcoming California Festival of Speed, apparently they're looking to add some 914s to the 356 Timeline.

So go to this link & either register directly, or contact Dick at his email at the bottom of the CFOS Concours Judging School page below to see what they want.

https://www.motorsportreg.com/events/356-ti...of-speed-006938

They probably couldn't get the Porsche Museum to send over 356 #1 which was their first mid-engined street car, so they're looking to filling the 2nd production street middie - our 914s!! biggrin.gif

How many of you knew that the 356 was supposed to be & intended to be a mid-engine car, until they simplified it for lower cost production in order to use more parts from the VW parts bin! shades.gif
blink.gif huh.gif Oh the heresy! unsure.gif wacko.gif biggrin.gif

Also, for those interested in Concours Judging or Showing & wanting to better understand our Judging, they're having a school the next day at the same CFOS weekend event -

There are also Time Trials racing & a Race Photography School at CFOS at the link below:

Tom,

If you didn't already know, we are featuring the VW-Porsche 914 in the 15th annual All Air Cooled Gathering.

Here's the thread on World:

Here's what Dick said about the 356 + 914 Timeline at Cal Festival of Speed at the Auto Club Ontario Speedway:

I think that the 914ers can show up the measly 15 356s registered so far, & you get in with free parking for the display, if you just want to watch the TT racing!

https://www.motorsportreg.com/events/356-ti...of-speed-006938

"They have room for 50 356’s and 914’s.

Right now they have 15 356’s!

Contact is Dr. Keith Kimble. Kjkmd@aol.com

Registration is on Motorsportreg.com

Don’t have to be Zone 8 member... just hit continue when the site ask about membership numbers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Everyone has to stop at Retto get a wristband and sign waivers.

They will be parked on Vendor Row and if they want to go out on the track when it is cold for a Track Tour they need to sign up and then they will be parked right next to the track entrance.

Thanks
DD"

I think Dick means Registration by "Retto" above.

Be there or be Square! beerchug.gif

Dave,

I do recall that post. It would be great if they'd also do something at the next year's one 2020 to help celebrate the 914's 50th too.

Right but the 914 was introduced on 9/11/69. Porsche had a 40 year anniversary for it in 2009.

It usually goes by Model Year (not calendar year), which technically starts in Aug/Sept of the prior year, & so I've not heard of them using the year of introduction.

So maybe that was an aberration?

PS - I recall that article & others about it in 2009, & thought it odd back then that they's use the introduction date at the car show, vs. the more typical use of MY.

Someone needs to tell Porsche that they are too early.

01/24/2019

“50 Years of the 917”, “50 Years of the 914” and “10 Years of the Panamera”
Three jubilees, one big birthday and a dynamic “Heritage Experience” – 2019 promises several high points for the Porsche Museum.

That would be very cool. Hopefully my car will be long done by then and I will be attending in it. Palms Springs, what's not to love? beerchug.gif

That would be very cool. ... Desert Summer!? blink.gif shades.gif

Spring or Fall is usually better & "Shoulder Season" out there due to the heat & winds of the summer months. Palm Springs is a winter peak season due to their relatively mild winters.

I have no idea of the exact dates for 2020, but IIRC they'll announce it officially at the 2019 Parade this year.

Yeah, they seem to be doing both sides of the fence - with the museum & PCNA/PAG using the first sales intro dates, & PCA & most of the rest of the auto industry using the model year for milestones.

Anyway - it's nice to have our 914s get some cred, & how cool is it to be paired with the 917! And I guess it means 2 years of fun! piratenanner.gif

It would be nice if PAG/PCNA/Museum & PCA would talk about the 914 - 917 Mezger link too - since he was the 917 engineer, & also did the /4 2.0L when VW said that the 1.8 was the largest displacement that their Type IV case/heads could go!

Mezger did it for our 73-76 914s, & then VW later stuck them in the late T2 & early T3 (Vanagon) Buses!
