I have dropped the engine in my 73 914 1.7 FI to replace the battery tray and support. Since it is out I decided to slide down the slippery slope of removing the tins, replace the front and rear crank seals along with push rod tube seals and clean it up a bit. Upon further inspection the seals from the cylinders to the case should be replaced also. That means pulling the heads and cylinders. A good friend who is assisting me has an extensive collection of nos parts and graciously offered to me a set of new pistons, cylinders, and rings along with all of the seals that I need. My engine id number starts with EB which designates it as a US (California)It was originally a California car. The EA is a US model. The US model pistons are 8.2:1 90mm, EB pistons are 7.3:1 90mm. The pistons that are being given to me are 8.2:1. Will there be any problems with using the 8.2:1 enlue of the 7.3:1.

Thnx Chris.

I think it will be a bonus and give you a touch more power but I don’t know if there was a different setting for the FI in the Cali cars. I’m sure the smarter guys on this site will know wheat to do.

That’s about a 10% increase.

IIRC the EB was for all MY 73 1.7's, with 49 states at 72 HP & the Calif at only 69 HP due to even tighter smog tuning strangulation.

Definitely go with the 49 state EA 8.2:1 P&C version, which should still be at the 70-72 MY's 80 HP - not the 73 MY's 72 HP 49 state - & with your 73 1.7L CA at only 69 - you'll notice the 11 HP bump, which is almost what the Calif 75-76 MY 2L's were at at 78-82 HP IIRC - & almost what the GC 2L in CA for 75-76 put out!

The 49 Staters' 2Ls without crapalytic converter & stricter CA smog tuning were the 88 HP shown in the engine info chart on here, as are the EB at 72 HP.

Porsche stuck an insert sheet into the 49 state dealer brochures which said something like - note that for California's stricter emissions controls, blah, blah, blah .... you've been demoted to only 69 HP (73 1.7) [or 78-82 HP (75-76 2.0)], but buy it anyway!

You rebuilder will probably have to tweak the ECU, MPS, etc. to get the settings to the 70-72 EA 1.7L spec (use the Factory manuals), but I'm pretty sure the cams were the same on all 70-73 1.7s - or just get a running ECU, MPS, etc. from another person's 1.7 who is upbuilding their or swapping to a 2056, etc.

Good Luck! beerchug.gif
